This event has been organised by Newcastle University students to raise awareness of and initiate thought-provoking conversations about topical issues that concern race and intersectionality. Actor Kema Sikazwe, <a href="https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/kema-kay-newcastle-tv-drama-26153327" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">who goes by the stage name Kema Kay</a>, equalities activist <a href="https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/history/new-exhibition-highlights-stories-women-24547800" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr. Beverley Prevatt Goldstein</a>, and civil rights activist <a href="https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/women-life-freedom-people-gather-25212061" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Parisa Panahi </a>will be in attendance, with educational and inclusive activities running throughout the day. This free event is open to all students and staff members. Some activities may be held in separate rooms within the Hadrian Building, so make sure to check the Agenda for further details. Agenda

Dr. Beverley Prevatt Goldstein has worked extensively in social work practice and education, equalities education, and community engagement. Her numerous publications include "Un Equal Access: The Housing Experience of Black People" and "Searching for new perspectives on heritage: The Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans". Beverley is actively involved in the creation of resources that center around African Lives in Northern England. This talk is titled “Is racism and anti-racism relevant to you today? Learning from Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1967 speech at Newcastle University”. Beverley will explore the meaning of racism, its current manifestations, and its impact. Additionally, she will exhibit inspirational black women in the North East. There will also be a walkthrough of African Lives in Newcastle from past to present. The exhibit and walkthrough will be available throughout the day after Beverley's talk. This talk will be held in the Bamburgh Room in the Hadrian Building.

Interactive Talk with Beverley Prevatt Goldstein

Providing a safe and confidential space for participants who are racially minoritised to vent about their negative and frustrating experiences surrounding race within the university as well as more broadly. This workshop will be entirely confidential and is an opportunity for catharsis. To be held in the Ford Room in the Hadrian Building.

Venting Workshop for People of Colour

Raising awareness of the oppression of women in Iran and how the Iranian people are counteracting the actions of the State through protest. Civil rights activist and interpreter Parisa Panahi will be detailing how the oppressive rules in Iran impacted her, as well her experience as a minority after coming to the UK. As an interpreter for police and immigration services, Parisa has extensive knowledge on the struggles Iranians face in the UK.

This workshop will be ran by Maia, a PhD candidate in Arts and Cultural Studies researching political communities on video streaming platforms. Zine making, a form of artistic expression, provides the opportunity for participants to discuss complex issues through an accessible medium.

Kema Sikazwe, who goes by the stage name Kema Kay, has starred in successful TV and theatre productions and was declared Performing Artist of the Year (2022) by the North East Culture Awards. Kema will discuss his lived experience of racial profiling, police use of force, and the criminal justice system in this insightful and interactive talk. The interaction between race and class in the face of the legal system will also be considered. Whilst this talk will be of particular interest to law students, the contents will be approachable for all students.
