From Zachary Lieberman’s Weird Type application to the kinetic typography on DIA’s Instagram, there have been exciting developments in the world of augmented type. Augment My Type will introduce you to basics of augmented reality (AR) and survey the various creation tools available for spatial design.

In this one-day workshop, you will learn the basics of augmented reality and about the variety of tools available for playing with images and text in AR. Through a series of lectures and hands-on projects, you will create an augmented type installation around Cooper Union that will be up for the duration of the conference. This workshop is great for designers, art directors, and type enthusiasts of all levels (no AfterEffects or coding experience necessary) who want to explore when and how to augment type. You will leave with a solid understanding of how to bring AR into your practice and some fun new skill in your typographic toolkit!

Martha Rettig is a designer, experimenter, and immersive artist whose work focuses on merging traditional mediums with emerging technologies. Her experience over the past fifteen years crosses many disciplines, including design concept, visual design, interactive design, interface design, data visualization, experience design, and creative direction. She co-founded an interactive design agency,
Cykod, in 2006 and helped build over two hundred websites, and apps from the ground up. Martha currently is an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts College of Art + Design teaching in the undergraduate Graphic Design department and the coordinator of the Dynamic Media Institute MFA program.
Sofie Hodara is a Boston-based multimedia artist, designer, and educator. Her work explores the intersection between traditional and cutting-edge media in order to create beautiful, non-utilitarian experiences with technology. She is a member artist at Bromfield Gallery (Boston MA) and frequent collaborator with colleague and friend, Martha Rettig. She teaches design at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, SMFA at Tufts University and Emmanuel College. She lives in Brookline with her partner, Nate, and lots of art on the walls.
