Samuel Simmons Consulting has 35 years of experience specializing in practical, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed work dedicated to improving the health and wellness of men of color and their families. By utilizing a broad range of projects and strategies that promote educational and culturally sensitive trauma-informed initiatives focused on addressing African American male and community trauma as an alternative way of thinking about community building "from the inside out," not just "the outside in." By providing unique, innovative, culturally specific materials and services to promote self-improvement, empowerment, healing, and hope to the communities being serviced. And build collaborations with likely and unlikely partners to challenge systems and institutions inside and outside of communities of color that create barriers to healing and empowerment.In 2009, the Community Empowerment Through Black Men Healing Conference called "Groundbreaking and Visionary" was started to provide an opportunity for meaningful community engagement of clinicians, advocates, and policymakers and access to national and local educators and community practitioners to create an environment for wellness, leadership, and "compassionate accountability." The overall goal is to improve the health and wellness of African American men and their families, making the larger community healthier and safer.In recent years, we have offered technical assistance and culturally sensitive trauma-informed capacity-building training to organizations to support leadership and staff learning, awareness, and growth to improve diversity in outreach, programming, and staffing. By providing an opportunity to have open discussions and addressing blind spots linked to historical traditional policies and practices, conscious or unconscious biases are barriers to inclusive change.

Join us at the 15th Annual Community Empowerment Through Black Men Healing Conference held on June 22 &amp; 23, 2023, at Metropolitan State University St. Paul Campus. On June 25th, 2009, we brought together professionals, community practitioners, men, and women to consider the question, "Could a focus on black men's healing be a way to empower the community?" In this 15th year, we will reexamine that question and explore practical trauma-informed, culture-sensitive outcome-driven current and future approaches that can lead to community empowerment and healing. The conference is open to men and women of all cultures working with the African American community or interested in the topic. KeynotesDr. Altreisha Foster is the author of “Cake Therapy: How Baking Changed My Life” be inspired by the story of her life changes after wandering through the valley of despair, facing trauma, and after stumbling upon baking, and how it saved her life. It&#x27;s about family, faith, forgiveness, fortitude, and how reframing traumatic experiences can foster healing and growth. &quot;Revolutionary and Radical Black Men Healing: From Trauma to Action- Black Men Naming, Facing, Taming, and Overcoming “Beasts” This keynote will address the individual, cultural, and social factors that influence, impact, and facilitate Black Men healing and hurting. Terrance Kwame-Ross, Ph.D., is a scholar-practitioner with over 25 years of experience working with Black boys and men in school, community, and treatment settings. “A Historical Perspective of Black History and Mental Health” This keynote will explore the history of mental health and the Black community. Also, resilience and the forging of family and social ties have enabled many African Americans to overcome adversity and maintain a degree of mental health. Curtis Marshall, MS, has over 31 years as a public health strategist and consultant.&quot;Compassionate Accountability: a journey to community safety and healing&quot; This lecture will explore the link between trauma, personal experiences, beliefs, and the unintended consequences of employing compassion and accountability separately. Also, the speaker will discuss culturally sensitive practices that employ &quot;compassionate accountability&quot; to create an environment of safety, healing, and success. Sam Simmons, the conference organizer, has over 33 years of experience as a behavioral consultant specializing in practical, culturally sensitive trauma-informed strategies addressing historical trauma and focused on improving outcomes for African American males and their families.On June 22, there will be Morning and Afternoon Workshop Topics: trauma-informed care, parenting, healing, resilience, violence prevention, etc.
