RELATOS is an intergenerational reading honoring women’s herstories and futures. We will share stories about our lives as women and girls from the Silent Generation to Gen Z. A participatory workshop will warm up the space, followed by live readings from luminary LA writers and global guests. Relatos will inspire communal reflection on our evolving experiences of place and possibility. A woman’s place is everywhere. All ages and gender expressions welcome!Directions and ParkingThe event is located at the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center and there is free street parking and a lot above the space. MEET THE AUTHORS<a href="https://amyshimshon.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Amy Shimshon-Santo</a> Amy Shimshon-Santo's writing and community work nourish inclusive cultural ecologies for planetary justice. She is the author of Catastrophic Molting (Flowersong Press, 2022), Even the Milky Way is Undocumented (Unsolicited Press, 2020), the limited edition chapbook Endless Bowls of Sky (Placeholder Press, 2020). Amy has penned numerous peer-reviewed essays for GeoHumanities; Education, Citizenship, and Social Justice; Public; SUNY Press; UC Press; Journal of Writers’ Project Ghana. She has edited two books amplifying community voices: Et Al. (co-edited with Genevieve Kaplan, IOPN, 2022) and Arts = Education (UC Press, 2010). <a href="https://codanladi.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Chekwube Danladi </a>Chekwube Danladi is the author of Semiotics (Georgia, 2020), winner of the 2019 Cave Canem Poetry Prize and a 2022 Independent Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council. She has received fellowships and support from Callaloo, Kimbilio Fiction, Hedgebrook, Jack Jones Literary Arts, the Lambda Literary Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. Her chapbook, Take Me Back, was included in the New Generation African Poets: Nne boxset. Her visual work has been commissioned by the Center for Afrofuturist Studies (a program of PS1), Already Felt: Poetry in Revolt and Bounty, Langer/Dickie, and the Black Poetry Review. She is the 2022-25 Writer-in-Residence at Occidental College and lives in Los Angeles.Zaynab Riba DabupZaynab Riba Dabup has been a journalist and a social worker who has provided services for people with disabilities. She recently returned home to Nigeria after nearly 30 years living in the United States. She is returning to her writing practice after too much time away. In retirement, she has recently ventured into community farming. She is the mother of Onyinye, Chekwube, and Josh.<a href="https://jenisemiller.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jenise Miller </a>Jenise Miller is a Black Panamanian, Compton-based writer, poet, and urban planner whose work explores art, archives, geographic mapping, and intersectional history. She is a 2021 California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellow and PEN America Emerging Voices Fellow. She co-produces "Reading the City" with Sēpia Collective, a conversation series with artists and cultural producers from Compton. Her words have been published in the Acentos Review, Boom California, Cultural Weekly, KCET Artbound, Los Angeles Times, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and The New York Times. A Pushcart-nominated poet and Voices of Our Nations Arts (VONA) alumna, she is the author of the poetry chapbook "The Blvd." <a href="https://twitter.com/lenacoledennis" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lena Cole Dennis</a>Lena Cole Dennis is The Selfie Queen and The Generation Connector. Her gift with words began as the most talkative and friendly out of the 10 children of Obediah and Georgia Mae Cole of Shreveport, Louisiana. She honed her gift as a poet and performer in the Watts Writers Workshop, the Watts Summer Festival, and the International Women's Year Poet in Mexico. Her community, connections, and communications work spans decades and includes The Jenesse Center, as the Domestic Violence Program Outreach &amp; Communications Director, Working with Ambassador Halle Berry, and The Rockwell International Space Shuttle Program, attending over 20 Launches and Landings and the Queen of England VIP Tour. She helped the Rockwell Community Interface Program create Summer Job Programs for over 600 Compton Students and provide college scholarships for Compton Students. She was Chair of The American Lung Association 1984 Summer Olympic Gold Medals Awards honoring Gold Medalist Tommy Smith. A longtime advocate and activist throughout Compton and Los Angeles, she is a mother and grandmother in her family and community and seeks to improve the lives of as many people as possible.<a href="https://luivette.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Luivette Resto</a>		Luivette Resto, a mother, teacher, poet, and Wonder Woman fanatic, was born in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico but proudly raised in the Bronx. She is a CantoMundo and Macondo Fellow, and a Pushcart Prize nominee. She is on the Board of Directors for Women Who Submit, a non profit organization in Los Angeles focused on women and nonbinary writers. Some of her latest work can be read on Spillway, North American Review, and the latest anthology, Gathering. Her latest collection Living On Islands Not Found On Maps is published by FlowerSong Press. Her first two books of poetry Unfinished Portrait and Ascension have been published by Tía Chucha Press. Some of her latest work can be found in the anthology titled What Saves Us: Poems of Empathy and Outrage in the Age of Trump edited by Martín Espada and on the University of Arizona’s Poetry Center website. She lives in the San Gabriel Valley with her three children aka her revolutionaries.<a href="http://carribeanfragoza.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Carribean Fragoza </a>Growing up in the peripheries of the Greater LA region and outside of Chicano communities of East LA that have largely come to define Chicano identity, including in culture and literature, has shaped my literary approach. Rather than sticking to usual tropes of Chicanx and Latinx writing, I break onto new thematic territory with unique character voices and perspectives. As a graduate of the Creative Writing MFA program at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), I push the boundaries of Chicanx literature using experimental approaches and devices and freely borrow from international queer and feminist literary movements. I have published fiction and poetry in publications such as BOMB Magazine, Huizache, Entropy, Palabra Literary Magazine and Emohippus. My arts/culture reviews and essays have been published in online national and international magazines such as the Aperture, Los Angeles Review of Books, L.A. Weekly, KCET, Culture Strike, and Tropics of Meta. I am also the founder and co-director of the South El Monte Art Posse (SEMAP), a multi-disciplinary arts collective.<a href="https://angelinasaenz.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Angelina Saenz</a> Angelina Sáenz, M. Ed, MFA is an award-winning educator and poet whose work focuses on memory, mujeres and motherhood. She is a UCLA Writing Project fellow, an alumna of the VONA/Voices Workshop for Writers of Color and a Macondo Writer’s Workshop Fellow. Her poetry has appeared in venues such as Diálogo, Split this Rock, Out of Anonymity, Angels Flight Literary West, Every Other, Cockpit Revue Paris and The Acentos Review. Her debut book of poetry Edgecliff was released in winter of 2021 with FlowerSong Press.<a href="https://karenllagas.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Karen Llagas </a>Karen Llagas's new chapbook, All Of Us Are Cleaved, is now out from Nomadic Press! You can order here, or get a signed copy from her directly. Her first collection of poetry, Archipelago Dust, was published by Meritage Press in 2010. A recipient of the 2022 RHINO Founder's Prize, Filamore Tabios, Sr. Memorial Poetry Prize, an Elizabeth George Award and a Hedgebrook residency, her poems, translations, prose and reviews have also appeared in various journals and anthologies, some of which you can read here. Born and raised in the Philippines, she has an MFA in Writing from Warren Wilson College and a BA from Ateneo de Manila. Karen lectures at UC Berkeley and works as a freelance translator &amp; cultural consultant. She divides her time between San Francisco and Los Angeles with her husband and their two dogs, Boccia &amp; Oso. <a href="https://jadeadia.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jade Adia </a>Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jade Adia writes stories about gentrification, Black teen joy, and the sh*t show that is capitalism. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Ethnicity, Race &amp; Migration, and a certificate in Human Rights. She recently survived law school, graduating with a specialization in Critical Race Studies. There Goes the Neighborhood is her debut novel.<a href="https://jirehdeng.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jireh Deng</a>Jireh (they/them) is a queer Taiwanese/Hong Konger American poet and multimedia journalist born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. They are currently an intern with In These Times and Janet Yang Productions while also freelancing for various publications including The Los Angeles Times and The Guardian US. They serve as the national board representative for the Asian American Journalists Association, L.A. chapter and currently co-direct AAJA national’s LGBTQIA+ affinity group. They’ve been a recipient of writing fellowships from the Key West Literary Seminar and Brooklyn Poets. They directed two short documentaries on Asian American identity in relationship to the geographies of L.A. “Mia’s Mission” and “Making Our Homes.”<a href="https://onyi.love" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Onyi Love</a>Felicia “Onyi” Richards is a Healing Artist, Priestess, and Teacher that utilizes sound, touch, word, and movement to support the collective. Described as a leader, medicine-woman, fire-igniter, shamanic practitioner, nurturer of “the tribe,” and much more by her teachers, elders, and colleagues, Onyi has a keen ability to ground, harness, conduct, and hold space for The Divine in various directions, across multiple dimensions, and in deeply transformative ways. In both her personal and professional life, she synergistically blends an ability to detect, interpret, and channel energy with an understanding of the practical, mundane, and grounded elements necessary for engaging with it when it shows up. She holds space for and inspires a remembering of our collective birthright and the only constant in life: change.<a href="https://revasanto.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Reva Santo</a>Reva Santo is a multi-disciplinary artist and creative alchemist. She graduated in Film Studies from Columbia University, where she was awarded the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts for her script Ash(é), and the Henry Evans Travel Fellowship to conduct arts-based research in the Caribbean. During her time there, she made the short film “Consejos de la Isla” or “Advice for the Island”, which was shown in a solo show at Studio 1.0.6. Gallery in Los Angeles, and most recently at “Who Owns Black Art: Questions of Cultural Ownership” curated by Zeal Press and Superposition Gallery. In 2017, she was selected to direct a visual poem “Wishes for Mom” for the Visible Poetry Project. The piece went on to be featured on “movingpoems.com”, shown at City Reliquary in New York, and in 2018 it was an official selection for Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery’s Juried Exhibition. Her latest film "Trust Issues" was the recipient of the Panavision "New Filmmaker Program Grant", and debuted at Pan African Film Festival in 2021.<a href="https://twitter.com/obby_iloakasia" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Obiageli A. Iloakasia</a>Obiageli A. Iloakasia is a Nigerian Writer, Social Critic, Changemaker, and Volunteer. She is the author of two poetry books (October Blues, 2021 and Kàmbílí, 2022), and a collection of Comic Stories titled Twitter Street (2021). She is a semi-finalist for the 2022 SprinNG Women Authors Prize, for her book, Kàmbílí. Obiageli is very passionate about Leadership, Teaching, and Learning. She believes that every well-written piece can inspire change and bring the world closer to us.Katia MoraesKátia Moraes began her career in Rio de Janeiro with her theatrical rock band O Espirito da Coisa. She has performed and recorded with Brazilian artists including Sergio Mendes, Airto Moreira, Oscar Castro-Neves, Rita Lee, Elba Ramalho, George Duke, Alex Acuña and Justo Almario's Tolú, "Latin Project," and Praful, among others. She has performed with the Samba Society, Falso Baiano, The Rio Thing, Midnight Drums, Viver Brasil Dance Company, Badauê, Man and Machine, and many more. After five CDs released with Sambaguru band, Kátia has ventured as a solo artist releasing Mistureba in 2018 and Motivo in 2020. She is currently developing Chacoalhar (Shake Up), a one-woman theatrical show supported by Cultural Practitioners at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) and the California Arts Council (CAC).<a href="http://www.elem.mx/autor/datos/131597" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Gloria Martínez Carrera</a>Escritora enna (mazateco del centro). Licenciada en Derecho. Certificada en Formación de Coordinadores de Talleres de Creación Literaria por la Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México uacm y el Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes conaculta. Ganadora del xiii Concurso del Cuento Mazateco. Ha sido becaria de poesía en la categoría de Escritores en Lenguas Indígenas del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes fonca 2006 y del programa Jóvenes Creadores (2011-2012).
