Mediums, Magicians and the Ouija Board: A Spiritualist History of Baltimore

Housed in a former Gilded Age mansion surrounded by Italian-style gardens, Johns Hopkins University's Evergreen Museum & Library is at once an intimate collection of fine and decorative arts, rare books, and manuscripts assembled by two generations of Baltimore's philanthropic Garrett family, and a vibrant, inspirational venue for contemporary artists. The collections of Evergreen afford a unique perspective regarding the evolution of American collecting taste and connoisseurship, from the country’s post-Civil War industrial revolution to the modern jet age.

Do spirits return, and can we communicate with the dead? Baltimore’s Spiritualists thought so, but magicians worked to disprove them. Learn about spirit mediums, the Spiritualist origins of the Ouija board, and Baltimore’s group of amateur magicians, the Demons Club. Presented by librarian Julie Saylor, Enoch Pratt Free Library. Julie Saylor has served as a library associate with Enoch Pratt Free Library for over 30 years, in many different departments at Central Library. Her current home is the Maryland Department, where she has created public programs about house history, historical cooking, land records, and the history of Spiritualism in Baltimore.
