This workshop aims to enhance patient outcomes from chemodenervation procedures by improving participants’ ability to recognize features that distinguish spasticity and dystonia, identify muscles that contribute to common clinical patterns, and accurately detect muscle targets. This program will enhance attendee’s confidence and procedural skills as they practice techniques, including how to use ultrasound guidance for chemodenervation injections.

The Ultrasound Guidance Hands-on Training and The Kinesthetic Training Sessions will offer a unique opportunity for neurologists to focus on functional skills that are applicable to real-world practice. These sessions will include hands-on ultrasound muscle identification exercises, injection practice with ultrasound phantoms, and injection training with anatomical models (ELVIS and ELVIRA).

TARGET AUDIENCE

This initiative is intended for neurologists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who work in neurology practices that provide care for patients with spasticity and movement disorders.

AGENDA

4:30 – 5:00 PM	Registration and dinner

5:00 – 5:10 PM	Welcome and Introduction

5:10 – 5:30 PM Dystonia and Spasticity: Essentials of Assessment for Neurologists

5:30 – 5:50 PM Treatment Overview and Practical Application for Neurologists: Therapy, Oral, Phenol, and BoNT)

5:50 – 6:10 PM Detailed Review of Ultrasound Guidance and Combined Ultrasound + EMG and/or E-Stim Guidance for Neurologists

6:10 – 6:20 PM Upper Limb Ultrasound Demonstrations: Forearm and Hand

6:20 – 7:00 PM Upper Limb Ultrasound Scanning: Practice Scanning on Colleagues

7:00 – 7:15 PM Head/Neck Ultrasound Demonstrations: Anterior and Posterior Neck Muscles

7:15 – 8:00 PM Head/Neck Ultrasound Scanning: Practice Scanning on Colleagues

8:00 –8:50 PM Intensive, Kinesthetic Training Sessions (2 Groups Rotate – see A & B below)

A - Ultrasound Guidance - (US Phantoms)

B - Models (ELVIS & ELVIRA)

8:50 – 9:00 PM Conclusion and Post-assessment

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Identify clinical features and diagnostic assessment techniques to aid in the differential diagnosis of cervical dystonia, limb dystonias, and spasticity

Review the mechanism of action, indications, and unique dosing requirements of the current botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) for the treatment of cervical dystonia, limb dystonias, and spasticity

Demonstrate guidance techniques for the safe and effective injection of BoNT in patients with cervical dystonia, limb dystonias, and spasticity

Identify sonoacoustic anatomical features of cervical and limb muscles, nerves, and other structures using ultrasound guidance to improve the safety and accuracy of BoNT injection

Develop individualized management plans for cervical dystonia, limb dystonias, and spasticity that appropriately incorporate chemodenervation

This activity is jointly provided by AKH Inc., Advancing Knowledge in Healthcare and Catalyst Medical Education, LLC.

This activity is supported by an educational grant from AbbVie Inc.

This activity is supported by in-kind support contributions from AbbVie Inc. and Terason.
