The 1947 Partition Archive gives voice to those who witnessed the Partition of South Asia in 1947, an event that is as significant as the Holocaust in Europe and the World Wars, but has attracted little documentation thus far.  So far, over 600 volunteers have helped preserve over 8000 stories on digital video.  There is a great urgency for us to carry out the work as fast as possible since those who remember Partition are now in their 80’s, 90’s and beyond.

Exhibit, witness accounts, book launch at the grassy Civic Center park in Berkeley, adjacent to the famed Berkeley Saturday Farmer's Market. We will be exploring untold South Asian histories through a presentation and through conversation with eye witnesses. Explore our previously hidden histories from the Indian subcontinent through an exhibit.Live Music performance by Zoe Viccaji (Coke Studio), Devika Chawla (Sony signed artist) accompanied by Noor Lodhi (Bass), Asim Wali (keys), Michael Anand (Guitars), and Manesh Judge (Drums)After a decade of field work across the mountains, deserts, villages and cities of South Asia, we are tremendously honored to announce the launch of our first book, 10,000 MEMORIES: A lived history of Partition, Independence and World War II in South Asia. Book 1, the inaugural volume of the 10,000 Memories series, draws on stories from Afghanistan in the west to Myanmar in the east, and Kashmir in the north to Kerala in the south, to provide vivid insights into the 1947 Partition in South Asia, unlike any previously written. 10,000 MEMORIES is a passionate labor of love by 40 editors, curators and artists, as well as 30 contributing authors, featuring the stories of nearly 400 Partition witnesses. Every page in this book is the result of hours of oral history documentation work. We're offering a 25% launch discount for event attendees!On March 18, editors and co-producers of 10,000 MEMORIES will unveil the book. A panel of witnesses will shine light on their own experiences of living through Partition and World War II, through live storytelling. A fusion and international desi band will play music. The venue is adjacent to Berkeley's Saturday farmer's market, offering plenty of picnic delights.A stunning visual narrative featuring story excerpts and over 1,000 photographs helps you journey across the Indian subcontinent, experiencing history vicariously through stories. The book unveils new threads of histories that contextualize the 1947 Partition within the larger global impacts of World War II. It is the most comprehensive work yet, on lived histories of Partition. The stories are evocative and bring history to life. You may cry, you may find yourself laughing uncontrollably or simply find yourself spellbound.The book has no front or back, and opens on one side in Afghanistan in the west and on the other side, in Myanmar in the east. The stories showcased give voice to diverse communities previously left out of the larger narrative of the 1947 Partition and mid-20th century South Asian histories.We cannot wait to share this book with you, and to see how all of you receive this two year project in the making.
