The Berkeley Journal of International Law is organizing its yearly Riesenfeld Symposium, Seeking Truth & Accountability: Mass Atrocities in the 21st Century. The Symposium will examine the legal framework around mass atrocities and efforts to report on and seek accountability for such crimes. As part of our Symposium, we present the Stefan A. Riesenfeld Award to individuals who have made an outstanding impact on the development of international law. We are honored to announce that the award recipient and keynote speaker this year will be Sevgil Musaieva, the Editor-in-Chief of Ukrainska Pravda, an independent Ukrainian online newspaper that has been courageously reporting on the situation in Ukraine since the Russian invasion. Accordingly, we hope to explore the intersection of international law and journalism, recognizing the importance of reporting on crimes of aggression as a precursor to accountability and subsequent prosecution of war crimes, and mass atrocities more broadly. Sevgil Musaieva will be joined by a slate of outstanding speakers across three panels. The panelists will discuss their scholarship and work experiences relating to the ways international actors address mass atrocities through (1) prosecution and litigation, (2) state responses, and (3) reporting. We will engage in discussions with leading scholars, activists, and practitioners on developments in international law to address both past and ongoing mass atrocities, international intervention, and the role of journalistic reporting and social media in raising awareness and seeking accountability for such crimes.
