About us:Shortwave Collective is an international, feminist artist group established in May 2020, interested in creative uses of radio. We meet regularly to discuss feminist approaches to amateur radio and the radio spectrum as artistic material, sharing resources, considering DIY approaches and inclusive structures. ​<a href="https://www.shortwavecollective.net/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.shortwavecollective.net/</a>About the workshop:In this workshop, participants will construct an ‘Open Wave-Receiver’ - a very simple radio. Participants will be engaged as co-researchers and experimenters, working with a basic set of materials: copper wire, metal clips, speaker wire, tent pegs, and chosen or found objects. Through a remote presentation, Shortwave Collective members in Europe will test their radios to demonstrate our listening practices - a convivial collective experience of searching for signals. <a href="https://www.shortwavecollective.net/open-wave-receiver.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.shortwavecollective.net/open-wave-receiver.html</a>Our approach:The Open Wave-Receiver is our feminist re-interpretation of foxhole radio designs. Our re-naming of this device has multiple connotations and shows how we want to think and engage with these simple circuits differently. It is a design that doesn’t have a tuner so multiple frequencies can be received at once. It is adaptable and forgiving: parts can be switched out for alternatives, pieces can be sculptural, and it can be literally built into a location. Our research and experiments are to be shared, to be further experimented by and with others, to be in-process: we often make Open Wave-Receivers with others and test them out giddily, listening together as a social practice.

Materials:The ticket price includes the necessary materials to construct a radio, but we encourage participants to bring / scavenge some scraps to customise:<ul><li>Something flat and non-conductive, around A5 size. </li><li>A tube (also non-conductive), the size and shape of a toilet paper tube. </li><li>Small pieces of metal or mineral. </li></ul>In order to complete your radio, you will need access to a field recorder or other device with a strong pre-amp, and headphones or a battery-powered speaker. Workshop format:This workshop will be delivered by Shortwave Collective members based in Europe, so whilst participants will be working from the Workshop Room at Open Hardware, the facilitators will be delivering the workshop on-screen. We have therefore limited the number of participants to 15, in order to offer the best possible support to participants remotely. Notes:Please note, participants must also hold a ticket to the 2023 Open Hardware Summit.
