Abstract: Tracy Markle and Dr. Brett Kennedy will provide mental health clinicians and professionals with the foundational knowledge necessary to understand behavioral addictions, including the 5 types of digital media overuse. This presentation will provide attendees with the basic assessment skills and key harm reduction and abstinence-based interventions developed for the treatment of digital media overuse and addictions. Tracy and her team focus on developing and providing education on prevention and intervention strategies for professionals, parents, and children of all ages, as well as developing effective approaches to treat digital media overuse issues and the common co-existing factors, such as academic challenges, family conflict, anxiety, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder. Tracy created a systemic treatment approach, called the FITS IA®; Family engagement, Integrated Treatment, Social connection for treating – Internet Addiction. She is a featured author along with other experts from around the globe, in the book: “Internet Addiction in Children and Adolescents; Risk Factors, Assessment &amp; Treatment”. This is the first book to thoroughly examine how early and easy access to the Internet-based digital media and devices impacts children and adolescents. Brett P. Kennedy, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with adolescents, adults, and couples. As a “digital immigrant” to the digital revolution, Dr. Kennedy has seen both the pros and the perils of digital media overuse on the lives of his clients. Dr. Kennedy advocates a philosophy of mindfulness and balance in our relationship with technology and works with clients struggling with digital media overuse and “addiction” to gaming, pornography, compulsive spending, social media, and information overload and co-occurring mental health concerns. As Co-Director of the Digital Media Treatment and Education Center (dTEC®), he brings his expertise to providing not only treatment but training, consultation, and education on digital media overuse to the community.
