R﻿AIN PLAN FOR APRIL 1 RENO TOURDue to the expected rainy weather, we are moving the talk to an indoor location a block away.For those who haven't seen the exhibit and want to brave the weather, feel free to come first to 5210 Wisconsin Ave. at 10 AM.If you'd prefer to come straight to the location of the talk, please come to the Heights office building inside Chevy Chase Pavilion at 5335 Wisconsin Avenue at 10:15 am. There, we will have the panel discussion, coffee, and light fare.The entrance to the building is next to the Cheesecake Factory. You will see someone standing next to the T-Mobile store who will guide you to the conference center space.Given these new logistics, the talk will run from 10:30AM to 11:30AM.H﻿ere are more details about the event:How can the injustice of Fort Reno be healed? Historian Neil Flanagan will lead a discussion searching for that answer. He will be joined by Mariana Baros-Titus and Cory Shaw who will connect it to other expulsions west of Rock Creek, and then to the national context via prominent figures that led these displacements, such as Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.BIOsNeil Flanagan is a historian with ten years in architectural practice. He is currently working on a book about the ways that the founders of American urban planning experimented on the neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. in the first decades of the 20th century. Since 2009, he has published on Washington, D.C. history and national design in various publications, including the Washington City Paper, Greater Greater Washington, the Architects’ Newspaper. He has spoken at conferences including the Washington History Conference, SACRPH, ASALH, and many local engagements. Flanagan is a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and in that field specializes in whole-building environmental design, from sensory experience to building systems integration. He grew up in Tenleytown and now lives in Ward 5.Mariana Barros-Titus is an independent researcher and community organizer working at the intersection of public history and advocacy in Washington, DC. Currently, she is working on three projects, including a Fellowship with the DC History Center that is focused on researching Latinx history in DC and working to bring those narratives into formal memory-keeping spaces in a way that appreciates the multiplicity of Latine identities. She is also currently working as the Project Coordinator for the Herbert Denton Biography Project and serving as the Project Manager for the Black Broad Branch project, the latter of which is a public history project based on Black-owned land in Chevy Chase DC. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of the District of Columbia, and her work is primarily focused on analyzing and dismantling barriers to system literacy for historically underrepresented communities. Mariana is passionate about nuancing the conversation and conceptualization of the Washington Metropolitan area to represent its rich and diverse local history. She believes in informing public policy through the sharing of community histories and individual life histories, which can serve as powerful reflections of governance in practice.Corey Shaw Jr. is a graduate of the University of the District of Columbia with a degree in Political Science with a concentration in Global Studies. By day, Shaw assists with homelessness prevention in Washington, DC. By night, he is a determined community activist that is committed to reconciling US history with present societal inequities. He was first introduced to activism while spending a semester working with tenants during the pandemic. Since then, Shaw has become a seasoned oral historian—working in communities like Africatown, Alabama—and an experienced community organizer. In the District, Corey works with Mariana Barros-Titus as Co-Founders of the Black Broad Branch Project. Beyond the federal city, Shaw supports African-American communities mobilizing towards reparations and redress.
