School of Communication

We will be celebrating the excellent work being done across the School of Communication that is making the world a better place. Our creative faculty partner with social scientists and others to assess the impacts of their work. Come out and learn more about how successful community-based partnerships are forged and how they have led to measurable impacts.Publishing in top journals requires excellent scholarly work as well as being savvy about the publishing process. Get insights about navigating the process from a panel of editors of top journals across the discipline of Communication.You’ve heard of virtual reality but have you had a chance to immerse yourself in another world? Learn more about our own wild spaces in South Florida through VR during Research Day. Professors Kim Grinfeder and Zevensuy Rodriguez will be your tour guides. (No alligators, we promise!)

Dr. Walid Afifi, Keynote Speaker. He is the President of the National Communication Association and is a Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He will be presenting on “Community-engaged work for human rights and social change".

VR (virtual reality) and XR (extended reality) hold immense promise for creating highly impactful interventions that can create social change. Professor Kim Grinfeder will provide a brief introduction to scholarly work in SoC using VR and invite attendees to experience a demo.

SoC GRANT AWARDEES' PROJECT PRESENTATIONS (CONCURRENT WITH VR DEMO)

The ability to publish in our disciplines’ flagship journals is an important indicator of the importance of the questions we are pursuing and the quality of our scholarship. Because journal space in these top journals is limited, understanding the factors that shape editorial decisions can be highly valuable. Dr. Afifi will provide key insights about the ways in which we can frame our scholarship to best advantage. Additionally, she will offer advice on interacting successfully with editors to improve your chances of having a manuscript accepted for publication.
