<p>We are pleased to invite you to the 2023 Olin College Summer Institute, which will take place in a virtual format the week of June 5 - 9, 2023. The <em>Olin College Summer Institute: Designing Impact-Centered Learning Experiences</em> is intended for educators who seek to catalyze change in engineering education and want to design impact-centered learning experiences at their own institutions. Past attendees have included new and experienced faculty members, institutional leaders, professional staff, and students. We welcome individual educators as well as institutional teams. Professional development credit for Massachusetts educators is available.</p><p><strong>The Foundation Experience</strong> is a three-day virtual workshop offered from June 5 - 7, 2023. Through interactive presentations and immersive exercises, participants will discover, experience, and practice effective, engaging approaches for designing impact-centered learning experiences. Each morning (9:00am - 12:30pm EDT), participants will participate in a workshop session facilitated by Olin College faculty centered on topics around student engagement, project/course/curriculum design, project based learning and externally-sponsored projects. Each afternoon, participants will be able to further explore the workshop topics on their own through suggested exercises and group discussion prompts.</p><p><strong>The Focus Workshops</strong> are a set of four virtual intensive explorations offered on June 8 -  9, 2023. These individual workshops allow participants an opportunity for focused learning in related topics or to engage with experts in areas on the forefront of engineering education. The Focus Workshops are appropriate both for current and past Summer Institute attendees. </p><p>Participants may register for the three-day Foundation Experience ($1,500), or they may opt to add on all four of the Focus Workshops for a discounted full week package ($2,100). Participants may also sign up for individual Focus Workshops ($300) <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/summer-institute-2023-1862169" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a>.</p><p>The registration deadline has been extended to June 1.</p><h2>Foundation Workshop Descriptions</h2><h3>Foundation Experience Workshop I: Participatory Design</h3><p><em>Monday, June 5, 9:00am-12:30pm EDT</em></p><p>Faculty Facilitators: <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/sara-hendren" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sara Hendren</a>, <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/tim-ferguson-sauder" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tim Ferguson Sauder</a></p><p>Involving students in the design of their own educational experiences can improve classes, motivate students and result in a more fair and just experience for everyone in the classroom. This is the power of participatory design — designing WITH and not just FOR stakeholders — in education. In this workshop, we will overview the student-centered design process used to create educational experiences at Olin and give you a chance to “try out” the first steps of that process. We will step through exercises together, organizing observations to create understandings and insights that can guide our design of educational experiences. Attendees will follow along as a team of Olin students works through this process on screen and discusses their evolving work with the presenters. Participants will then have an opportunity to apply these tools to a project at their own institution.</p><h3>Foundation Experience Workshop II: A Goal-Driven Approach to Projects</h3><p><em>Tuesday, June 6, 9:00am-12:30pm EDT</em></p><p>Faculty Facilitators: <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/jean-j-huang" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jean Huang</a>, <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/robert-martello" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rob Martello</a></p><p>In this workshop participants will learn frameworks, tools, and examples to aid the development of courses and project-based learning experiences, using cases and examples from the Olin curriculum. We will work with the “GAPA” (Goals, Activities, Products, Assessments) framework as a suggested model for curricular change efforts, large and small, and apply design tools and frameworks towards development of curricular projects at your own institution.</p><h3>Foundation Experience Workshop III: Achieving Impact Through Externally Partnered Projects</h3><p><em>Wednesday, June 7, 9:00am-12:30pm EDT</em></p><p>Faculty Facilitators: <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/scott-hersey" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Scott Hersey</a>, <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/benjamin-linder" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Benjamin Linder</a><a href="https://emerson.edu/faculty-staff-directory/eric-gordon" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a></p><p>This workshop focuses on developing a framework for achieving social impact through externally-partnered undergraduate learning experiences and programs. Through active and reflective modes, we will work toward a shared understanding of what “impact” means, and identify opportunities for involving students in the work of social benefit while they progress toward their degrees. We will also focus on the process of engaging with community partners, and on the collaborative process of identifying appropriate student projects that are aimed at achieving real and sustained impact in the world. We will explore characteristics of collaborative and mutual partnerships, guidelines for identifying and prioritizing project goals, markers of successfully-scoped projects, and strategies for maximizing social impact in sustainable ways. </p><h2>Focus Workshop Descriptions</h2><h3><a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/olin-college-2023-summer-institute-focus-workshop-1-tickets-574791054517" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Focus Workshop 1</a>: Creating Learning Environments that Simultaneously Support Wellness, Inclusivity, and High Performance </h3><p><em>Thursday, June 8,  9:30am - 12:00pm EDT</em></p><p>Faculty Facilitators: <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/sarah-s-adams" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sarah Spence Adams</a>, <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/paul-ruvolo" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Paul Ruvolo</a>, <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/shannon-tocher" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Shannon Tocher</a></p><p>In this workshop, we will work together to explore the complex relationships that exist in learning environments that simultaneously emphasize wellness, inclusivity, and high achievement/performance. These interrelated topics have played an increasingly prominent role on campuses in recent years, and those who are supporting students through such environments may find themselves in need of support!  Participants will learn strategies and engage in activities designed to help shift their own classes and other environments to become more accessible and less overwhelming for everyone - faculty, staff, and students - while still maintaining high academic and professional standards for all. The tools that we will introduce to explore this space will be applicable to other scenarios, such as in course and curriculum design. </p><h3><a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/olin-college-2023-summer-institute-focus-workshop-2-tickets-574795888977" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Focus Workshop 2</a>: Developing Interdisciplinary Learning Experiences and Teaching Teams</h3><p><em>Thursday, June 8, 1:00 - 3:30pm EDT</em></p><p>Faculty Facilitators: <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/jean-j-huang" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jean Huang</a>, <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/robert-martello" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rob Martello</a></p><p>The challenges of the 21st century require educators to adopt innovative approaches that train students to think and act in creative multifaceted ways.  This workshop offers strategies for integrating multiple perspectives into educational activities.  We will introduce the concept of interdisciplinary integration by discussing the benefits of this approach as well as a number of best practices and valuable tools that foster the design and delivery of integrated learning experiences.  We will also discuss team teaching in the context of interdisciplinary integration but also as a broader skill that has applications in any educational setting that benefits from the input of more than one instructor.  This workshop will offer frameworks that educators have found valuable, examples from Olin College, and opportunities for interactive practice and discussion. This workshop offers creative, scaffolded ways for participants to access and distill why they care about their professional practice. Participants will leave with a compelling story about their personal stakes in an individual or team project, as well as with prompts and tools to help colleagues and students do the same.</p><h3><a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/olin-college-2023-summer-institute-focus-workshop-4-tickets-574803050397" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Focus Workshop 4</a>: Authentic Assessment in Project-Based and Impact-Centered Learning</h3><p><em>Friday, June 9,  1:00 - 3:30pm EDT</em></p><p>Faculty Facilitator: <a href="https://www.olin.edu/bios/jessica-townsend" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jessica Townsend</a></p><p>When we teach, we seek to make students’ thinking visible to both instructors and themselves in order to assist learning and to measure progress towards achievement of learning goals. In an innovative engineering or STEM curriculum, assessment of student learning must incorporate learning modalities including projects, teaming, and hands-on work, and incorporate learning goals beyond just technical content. Drawing on the tools of participatory design and goal-driven project design we will introduce a framework for assessment, with a rich set of examples and case studies from the Olin curriculum, to show how student assessment can be integrated into the design of the student experience.</p><h2>Costs</h2><p>Participants may opt for the three-day <strong>Foundation Experience</strong> ($1500/person) or the full week package that includes the <strong>Foundation Experience plus all four Focus Workshops</strong> ($2100/person).
