<h2>Summary</h2><p><em><strong>Can you spot the bug in this Python code?</strong></em></p><p>Join us on a bug-hunting journey, designed to help you identify common pitfalls, edge-cases, and anti-patterns in your Python code. These mistakes will transcend simple typos and syntax errors, and instead point to deeper conceptual and knowledge gaps when using Python.</p><h2>A﻿bstract</h2><p>In this seminar, we will try to spot some bugs in Python code to learn how to use Python more effectively.</p><p>Each section will start with a code sample containing one or more bugs, then present a solution to these bugs, as well as an in-depth discussion of the background concepts and knowledge necessary to never make this mistake again.</p><p>In this session, we'll see bugs about…</p><ul><li>non-determinism and reproducibility with sets and random number generators</li><li>eagerness and laziness with comprehension syntax and generator expressions</li><li>strong and weak references with the weakref module and callbacks</li><li>the descriptor protocol with @classmethod, @staticmethod, and @property</li><li>Python interpreter mechanics with the bytecode and try/except</li></ul><h3>Goals</h3><p>During this seminar, attendees will:</p><ul><li><strong>spot the bug:</strong> identify that there is a mistake.</li><li><strong>know why it happened:</strong> understand the patterns and usage that led to this mistake.</li><li><strong>never make the same mistake again:</strong> correct conceptual understanding and develop greater intuition.</li></ul><h3>Audience</h3><p>This seminar is intended for programmers, engineers, data scientists, or scientific researchers who are looking to improve the quality of their Python code, who want to keep up to date with recent advancements in Python, and who want to develop a deeper, stronger intuitive understanding.</p><p><em>Do you want to write fewer bugs? </em><strong><em>Then this session is for you.</em></strong></p><p>This session is for anyone with a basic familiarity of Python syntax and functionality who wants to improve their ability to write effective, robust code. <h2>Presenter:<em> James Powell</em></h2><p><strong>James Powell</strong> is the founder and lead instructor at Don't Use This Code. A professional Python programmer and enthusiast, James got his start with the language by building reporting and analysis systems for proprietary trading offices; now, he uses his experience  as a consultant for those building data engineering and scientific computing platforms for a wide range of clients using cutting-edge open source tools like Python, pandas, and React.</p><p>He also currently serves as a Board Director of NumFOCUS, the 501(c)3 non-profit that supports all the major tools in the Python data analysis ecosystem (i.e., pandas, numpy, jupyter, matplotlib). At NumFOCUS, he helps build global open source communities for data scientists, data engineers, and business analysts. He helps NumFOCUS run the PyData conference series and has sat on speaker selection and organizing committees for 18 conferences. James is also a prolific speaker: since 2013, he has given over seventy conference talks at over fifty Python events worldwide.</p>
