The summit features the STLW performance program and concluding discussion series of the yearlong NEH Dialogues on the Experience of War program. There will also be poetry readings, panels, artmaking and movement workshops, a portfolio review, exhibition tours, fifteen-minute Open Platform presentations, and more. Register here: https://bit.ly/stlw-newberry Join military veterans and poets Erika Renee Land, Monty Little (Diné), Dunya Mikhail, and Carlos Sirah for an evening of poetry exploring the disparate impacts of war and the search for a path toward solidarity.

Discuss, share, and reflect on the complex connections and contradictions that arise when placing the “American Indian Wars” and the “Global War on Terror” in dialogue. This Surviving the Long Wars discussion will focus on how the humanities themes of intimacy, resilience, and solidarity across difference relate to the US long wars. Eric Perez will lead a discussion about the military uniform, identity, and the manipulation of the uniform as art. Eric Perez [US Marine Corps] is a Chicago-based artist and educator. Eric studied photography at Triton College and earned his BFA at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He currently serves as the project manager at the Floating Museum. Perez's work has appeared in exhibitions at Triton College Art Gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago, and Gallery 400. STLW Humanities Discussion Hosted by NEH Veteran Fellow Eric Perez

Lovella Calica will lead a community health workshop focused on TRE exercises (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises)–a simple series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down and resetting the nervous system. When this process is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is able to return back to a state of balance. Calica has been providing TRE sessions to veterans, social justice advocates, children, women, artists, and others since 2015. TRE is a transformative relaxation tool that can decrease stress and anxiety and increase one’s ability to handle the ongoing stress of life. Community Health Workshop with Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises

Eddie Falcón [US Air Force veteran] and Angela Waller [US Army veteran] invite Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) community members to a writing workshop that will build on prompts from BIPOC writers and articles about pertinent topics. Please bring yourself, your ancestors, your heart, and of course your words to this exciting co-created space to share life experiences that go beyond the military. Warrior Writers BIPOC Writing Workshop

Dorothy Burge will lead an all-levels quilting workshop that begins with an introduction to the history and cultural significance of quilting within the Black community. Dorothy Burge (she/her) is a multimedia artist and community activist inspired by history and current issues of social justice. Dorothy is a native of Chicago and a descendent from a long line of quilters from Mississippi, who created beautiful quilts from recycled clothing. Her realization that the history and culture of her people were being passed through generations of quilters inspired her to use the medium as a tool to teach history, raise cultural awareness, and inspire action. Dorothy received her Master of Arts in Urban Planning and Policy and her Bachelor of Arts in Art Design from the University of Illinois Chicago. Quilting Workshop with Dorothy Burge

Discuss, share, and reflect on the complex connections and contradictions that arise when placing the “American Indian Wars” and the “Global War on Terror” in dialogue. This Surviving the Long Wars discussion will focus on how the humanities themes of intimacy, resilience, and solidarity across difference relate to the US long wars. Gina Herrera will lead a discussion around climate change and environmental degradation. Gina Herrera (Costa Rican and Tesuque Pueblo) [Navy, Army, and Air Force veteran] is a Chicago-born-and-raised artist residing in California. She received a BFA in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Herrera teaches at Arvin High School and is an adjunct professor at Bakersfield College. STLW Humanities Discussion Hosted by NEH Veteran Fellow Gina Herrera

Hussein Smko leads a movement workshop exploring the themes of the Triennial through the body. Hussein Smko was the Adel Euro Fellow from 2016–2020. He is a self-trained Kurdish choreographer whose talent was spotted by Battery Dance in 2014. He has taught in New York City public schools and USC in Los Angeles for a Spoken Word and Dance program. Hussein founded his own dance company, Project Tag, which is based in New York City. Movement Workshop with Hussein Smko

Open Platform is an opportunity for veterans and war-impacted artists and community members to share and learn about the wide range of art practices and projects currently happening, through a series of short PowerPoint presentations and talks. Each presentation consists of a ten-minute slideshow, performance, or reading, followed by five minutes of Q&A with the audience. Open Platform is designed to facilitate open dialogue and the sharing of many ideas, strategies, projects, actions, and efforts within the field. If you are a veteran or war-impacted artist, writer, or performer, or if you are helping to organize a creative project or program, apply to share your work with the community. Friday 3/17 Programs

The Hyde Park Art Center’s Triennial exhibit, SURVIVING THE LONG WARS: Unraveling and Conjuring, opens with a series of performances entitled The Space Between. The program will showcase artists whose work focuses on the lived experiences and complex perspectives of GWOT veterans and of descendants and survivors of the long wars. Dancer Hussein Smko, spoken word artist Hipólito Arriaga, and performance artist GOODW.Y.N. will explore topics of identity, solidarity, and liberation through their expressive practices.

Discuss, share, and reflect on the complex connections and contradictions that arise when placing the “American Indian Wars” and the “Global War on Terror” in dialogue. This Surviving the Long Wars discussion will focus on how the humanities themes of intimacy, resilience, and solidarity across difference relate to the US long wars. Anthony Torres will lead a discussion around an open letter from Rijin Sahakian, an Iraqi artist, to the Berlin Biennale artistic team. The letter questions the use of images of torture in art. Anthony Torres [US Army veteran] is a writer, performer, and the Executive Director of Combat Hippies. Torres is currently a National Endowment for the Humanities Veteran Fellow, a 2022 National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC) Leadership Fellow, and a 2021 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow (CAF). STLW Humanities Discussion Hosted by NEH Veteran Fellow Anthony Torres

Dunya Mikhail will lead a poetry workshop based on responses to works featured in the SURVIVING THE LONG WARS: Unlikely Entanglements exhibition. Dunya Mikhail is an Iraqi American poet and writer. She is a laureate of the UNESCO Sharja Prize for Arab Culture and has received fellowships from the United States Artists, the Guggenheim, and Kresge. Her honors also include the Arab American Book Award and UN Human Rights Award for Freedom of Writing. Writing Workshop with Dunya Mikhail

Joseph Lefthand will lead a movement and breathing workshop exploring the embodiment of resiliency and reconciliation. Joseph Lefthand (Cheyenne-Arapaho, Taos, and Zuni tribes) [US Marine Corps veteran] is an artist, administrator, and cultural advocate based in Chicago. Lefthand works at the intersection of art and social practice, exploring embodied movement, “performance-as-theory,” and communal inquiry. Lefthand’s experience as a healer, advocate, investigator, and scholar informs his continual dialogue with the cultural and historical implications of war, militarism, violence, and resistance. Movement and Breathing Workshop with Joseph Lefthand 

Contribute to artist Sabba S. Elahi's embroidery project to memorialize the names of civilians–women and children–who were killed by US drone attacks in Pakistan. Since 2014, Elahi has worked with the online archive, “Naming the Dead,” published by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. The archive highlights individual stories that inform Elahi’s communal art project. Sabba Elahi’s embroidery circle is suited for guests of all experience levels. The session will balance both basic stitch designs and free form designs. Guests are encouraged to attend for the duration of the workshop to allow for organic dialogue among participants. Drone Stories Embroidery Circle with Sabba Elahi

Using images from military history, US Army veteran Yvette M. Pino and founder of the Veteran Print Project will demonstrate how to make trace monoprint memory drawings. Pino will share images and stories of local Chicago Latinx veterans as prompts for participants to create layered memories and stories. Participants are welcome to bring their own images to work with, as long as they are not original photographs. A trace monoprint drawing is made by rolling out a small amount of slow-drying ink onto a piece of plexiglass and placing a very thin piece of Japanese paper over it, along with a source image to trace with a pencil or pen. Yvette M. Pino [US Army veteran] served with the 101st Airborne Division from 2002–2006. She earned a BFA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2011 and received a Certificate in Museum Studies from Northwestern University in 2018. Trace Monoprint Memory Drawings with Yvette Pino

Join Frontline Paper in an introductory participatory demonstration of the transformative process of creating paper from US military uniforms. Participants will form sheets of paper from premade pulp. Participants will then be given the opportunity to make a unique piece of art on their sheet of paper using pigmented, finely-beaten pulp and stencils.
