Join Amnesty International Group 137 for a virtual presentation and discussion on local and national responses to the ongoing human rights crisis in Iran. Our guest speakers will be Elise Auerbach, Amnesty International USA Iran country specialist and San Diego resident Samar Sepehri, Iranian-American member of Group 137. 
Public protests in Iran, which began in 2021 in response to worsening economic conditions, suppression of free speech, police brutality, violations of women’s human rights, and other grievances, greatly increased in September, 2022 when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody after being detained for “improperly” wearing hijab, the mandatory head covering women in Iran are required by law to wear. Iranian authorities have attempted to suppress the protests through escalating police violence, mass detentions, sham trials, and executions, among other human rights abuses.
Elise will discuss AIUSA’s efforts to protect the human rights of Iranian protestors and Samar will discuss efforts by the local San Diego Iranian community to support the protestors as well as what other San Diegans can do to help.
