The Alliance for Experiential Problem-Based Learning at the University of Illinois Springfield has partnered with the Illinois State Board of Education to provide trauma-informed, experiential training for teachers titled “The Night Before.” Our team has designed this 3.5-hour training to encourage teachers to utilize the problem-based learning cycle to consider alternative explanations for students’ behavior and actions. This training utilizes real-world scenarios to offer perspective on traumas some students face outside of school. Participants will learn ways to identify and address the needs of their students. The Night Before also examines how secondary trauma may impact those who care for children in professional settings. Participants will learn strategies to manage their stress responses. This experience highlights the importance of recognizing the signs of trauma and addressing students’ needs to prevent adverse outcomes and create a safer school environment.The content of this training session utilizes an actual 911 call made by a young child in a domestic violence situation that may be emotionally challenging or triggering. The presenters will aim to let you know in advance when potentially triggering material will be being discussed. Please take this into consideration when registering for this event.
