The Soil Keepers Science and Training ProgramUnit I: The Body of Soil (4 weeks, in-person: Chicago)“What if we endeavor to build a network of soil advocates who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to create social ecologies that are resilient to the challenges of the 21st century?”The second session of our larger certification series, this 4 hr course meets every Saturday in Chicago (venue TBD) over four weeks. The information builds on the Introduction course (required) offered online on Feb. 21st (a two session course for 2 hrs each). It is designed to train soil advocates to amend soil in their yard, neighborhood, or community-led remediation project. You can enjoy the class without continuing on to the certification track as well!Instructor Nance Klehm leads participants through a science-based 4 unit course exploring the body, life, and chemistry of soil. Each unit is 4 weeks meeting once a week in person the Fall and Winter Seasons.The course begins with a required online introduction course offered for 2 hrs each this February starting on the 21st and concludes with an individual capstone design project. Unit 1: Body of Soil- MarchUnit 2: Life of Soil. Unit 3: Chemistry of Soil. Unit 4: Remediation &amp; Capstone Project.

Week 1 Saturday, March 4th <ul><li> Course overview and soil Introduction: What is soil? What is its function? </li></ul> Week 2 Saturday March 11th <ul><li> Geology basics: Soil origin, formation, and minerals.</li></ul> Week 3 Saturday, March 18th <ul><li> Soil Composition: Texture, aggregation, and color.</li></ul> Week 4 Saturday March 25th <ul><li> Soil-Water: Interactions and relationships.</li></ul>

Outcomes<ul><li>Learn and integrate regenerative systems and ecological theory through hands-on learning.</li><li>Build core competencies and skills in soil science to address climate variances, soil health, reduced fertility, and contamination.</li><li>Apply these competencies practically to a situation or place to build resilient soil, food systems, and community health.</li></ul>

Meet your instructorNance Klehm, the Founder of Social Ecologies, has grounded her life in the practice of digging in the dirt.
