故事以移居美國的四對華裔母女為中心，穿插回憶講述了她們近百年的愛恨，奮鬥、矛盾及苦難、蒼桑。兩代女性演繹了由相互爭鬥到殊途同歸、相互認同的悲喜劇。最終，母女間因時代背景與文化教育不同而引起的隔閡也消融在博大寬廣的母愛中。
