Fibershed is a non-profit educational and research organization that develops regenerative textile systems that are based on carbon farming, regional manufacturing, and public education.We envision the emergence of an international system of regional textile communities that enliven connection and ownership of ‘soil-to-soil’ textile processes. These diverse textile cultures are designed to build soil carbon stocks on the working landscapes on which they depend, while directly enhancing the strength of regional economies. Both fiber and food systems now face a drastically changing climate, and must utilize the best of time-honored knowledge and available science for their long-term ability to thrive.

Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station, CA, for a workshop taught by Cory Gunter Brown that is as much about crafting beautiful textiles as it is about forming deep relationships with the land, seasons, and life cycles of the materials we work with. This introduction to Eco Printing is formed with intention, to bring us back to wonder and reverence, interweaving in relationship with dye plants, fiber animals, and the lands they grow from. This practice is an open door inviting us into a deeper understanding of the ways in which this earth nourishes and cares for us and we may do the same in turn.We’ll work with Fibershed Climate Beneficial wool, plus silks, several different wild gathered plants (including eucalyptus), and optional iron mordant, to make living breathing textiles in an expressive and ethical way. You’ll learn how some plants interact differently with different textiles, how to find out if a plant will work for eco printing, and when to work with iron mordant. You’ll finish class with a Climate Beneficial wool piece that can be used as a wall hanging, table runner, or altar cloth and a few pure silk pieces that can be used in a variety of ways as well. Cory Gunter Brown has been practicing and teaching Eco Printing for thirteen years. She learned from her teacher India Flint, one of the fairy godmothers of this magical practice, and from the plants and fibers themselves. The workshop runs from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Limited to 10 students.Please Bring:<ul><li>Sun hat, warm layers</li><li>Personal lunch, snacks and beverages (various teas will be provided)</li><li>Pruning shears, if you have them, or sturdy scissors</li><li>Sitting cushion / camp chair</li><li>You’re welcome to bring any plants you might want to try, and I encourage any of the ones listed here if you have them around: fresh avocado pits, eucalyptus leaves/bark (windfall), rose leaves, oak leaves (not coast live oak), Japanese maple/maple leaves, black walnut leaves, onion skins, dry curly dock seed (on stems), coreopsis flowers, purple plum leaves, manzanita leaves/bark (windfall), sweetgum leaves, geranium leaves, blackberry leaves</li></ul>

Cory Gunter Brown is an artisan and empath who has practiced the entwined arts of sacred adornment and the handmade her whole life. She was born and raised in East Oakland and comes from a radical and creative family of dancers, machinists, artists, and activists. She’s learned the most powerful and beautiful truths in her life by listening to the voice of the Earth, the voices of Indigenous Peoples present and past, and her own inner voice. Through a decolonial lens, her work with natural dyes, and her relationship with the living Earth, she’s come to understand that for every toxic, abusive reality happening on this Earth, there is another way that is far more compassionate, elegant, and balanced within the cycle of life. She’s learned that our bodies are an extension of the Earth and the Earth is an extension of our bodies, and her choices in life now flow from that knowing. Cory spent ten years co-creating The Moon, an Oakland based feminine clothing line made by local hands with natural fibers and natural dyes. She is now teaching natural dye workshops to adults and children, making naturally dyed textiles, plant infused body oils, and very tiny baskets from invasive plants.
