Climate Action Party: Save Port Arthur!

An Action Party is an online event that packs valuable information and concrete action into a 60-minute venue.Each Action Party has an environment-related topic and a featured guest who is an expert in that topic.  We begin with a 20 minute presentation by the featured guest, followed by 20 minutes of Q&A, and then 20 minutes of optional action-taking with the Climate Action Now app.  The actions have been prepared in advance to help participants take the most impactful action in the shortest period of time.  During the action segment, the party's moderator sets a goal for the number of actions to be taken and shows participants their progress towards that goal in real-time with an online, automated goal tracker. Action Parties

Each Action Party begins with a 10-minute presentation by a featured expert, followed by a panel discussion and optional action-taking with the free Climate Action Now app. Participants are invited to share questions for our panelists to discuss.

Port Arthur, Texas (pop. 55,000) is typical of many communities where the fossil fuel industry builds its most polluting facilities. This is where much of America’s oil and gas is refined. Yet despite Port Arthur’s importance to our fuel-dependent way of life, few people have ever heard of it.It is an area that is purposefully forgotten. The largest percentage of the population is Black, and the population suffers under the staggering health consequences of living in close proximity to industrial facilities. Pressed up against the Louisiana state line, this "fence-line community " is downwind of nearly every coastal refinery in Texas, the last in a chain of cities making up a Beaumont-Orange-Port Arthur metropolitan area so crowded with industry that, from the air, it appears to burn yellow.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxics Release Inventory places Jefferson County among the very worst in the nation for air releases of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, and reproductive disorders. In a state that regularly records in excess of 2,500 toxic emissions events per year, Port Arthur is near the top of the list of offending cities.Join us for an hour of solidarity and action to help the community of Port Arthur get justice. Featured Guest John Beard Jr. will tell us the story of the town and what the community is doing to fight back. During our action segment, we’ll bombard the polluters, regulators, city, state, and federal officials with emails demanding that they hold the polluters to account and give Port Arthur long overdue redress. The actions will remain in the app for other users to take in the weeks and months to come, until Port Arthur receives the measure of justice it is due.<h3>About Our Featured Guest</h3>John Beard is the founder, president, and executive director of the Port Arthur Community Action Network (“PA-CAN”), serving the Port Arthur/Southeast Texas area as a community advocate, focusing on environmental issues and community development. Pearson is a leader of Memphis Community Against Pollution and co-founder of Memphis Community Against the Pipeline (MCAP) which is a Black-led environmental justice organization that successfully defeated a multi-billion dollar company's crude oil pipeline project.Tim Guinee, President of Climate Action Now, has been a veteran in numerous climate campaigns around the country, most notably as the Legislative Coordinator for the New York Climate Reality Chapters Coalition.
