Spinning with Fiber Circle Studio + Natural Dyes with Heidi Iverson

Fibershed is a non-profit educational and research organization that develops regenerative textile systems that are based on carbon farming, regional manufacturing, and public education.We envision the emergence of an international system of regional textile communities that enliven connection and ownership of ‘soil-to-soil’ textile processes. These diverse textile cultures are designed to build soil carbon stocks on the working landscapes on which they depend, while directly enhancing the strength of regional economies. Both fiber and food systems now face a drastically changing climate, and must utilize the best of time-honored knowledge and available science for their long-term ability to thrive.

A Collaboration with Fiber Circle Studio (Day 1) + Fibershed Learning Center (Day 2)

DAY 1: SATURDAY, MARCH 25th, 10am - 4pm at Fiber Circle Studio — Spinning Fiber Into Yarn with Fiber Circle StudioLearn how to transform fiber into yarn!We will be working with local, undyed wool roving from Mendocino Wool &amp; Fiber to create either 2 skeins of yarn or 1 skein of a 2-ply yarn (students can choose). The first half of the day will be spent understanding the basics of spinning, and begin developing muscle memory of drafting while using a drop spindle (supplied for class use). We&#x27;ll take an hour lunch break from 12:30 to 1:30. After lunch, students may either continue on the drop spindle, or those who wish may bring their own wheel and practice the skills they learned from the spindle to the wheel. We will have a few wheels available for students to use, but do not have enough for everyone. Heidi will be guiding us in preparing plant materials and creating dye pots from a number of regional dye plants, as well as showing us how to prepare our yarns with mordants when needed. Each contribution entities you to choose one item of comparable value.You may arrive up to 30 minutes early for the workshop you are attending, and/or depart up to an hour after the workshop ends, to allow time to browse and try on items in the closet, and make your trade!

ABOUT THE I﻿NSTRUCTORS:SPINNING: Alisha Bright discovered knitting in her late teens during a time of hardship and in search for her identity as a young woman. The moment she embarked on her first project, she realized that this is what she was made for.She became involved with a few of the local yarn shops and wandered off to live on a farm for a few months where she learned about fiber processing, spinning, and self-sustainability. Upon her return to Sonoma County, she began the Master's Hand Knitting Program through TKGA, and resumed teaching knitting classes at her local yarn shop.
