2023 SPARC Tri-I Diversity Retreat:  Effective Communication

Join us for a communication workshop, grant/fellowship opportunities, faculty development programs, networking groups and a keynote lecture.

This annual, half-day retreat unites members of our “Tri-I” community (Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) to enhance the career path of those interested in research careers in the biomedical sciences and foster community. Join us for a fun experiential and interactive communications workshop facilitated by the <a href="https://aldacenter.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science</a>. The workshop is designed to help scientists and researchers learn to engage and inspire diverse audiences through effective communication. Participants will learn how to balance being prepared with responding in the moment to address questions. The program emphasizes universal communication strategies, including avoiding jargon, and technical skills for creating engagement.Program Outcomes<ul><li>Identify strategies to make a message memorable </li><li>Recognize and begin to avoid using complex terminology and jargon</li><li>Use a three-step process to design a message strategically</li><li>Develop a personable and engaging online presence</li></ul>MethodologyThe Alda Method is a unique approach to science communication training that combines communication research and improvisational theater exercises. This immersive approach emphasizes two-way communication to build trust and invite others to share in the wonder and joy of science. It incorporates research and best practices from science communication, journalism, ethics, and other relevant fields. Career/Networking FairEngage with members of the Tri-I community and participate in our career/networking fair. Information will be available regarding grant/fellowship opportunities, career/faculty development programs, networking groups and other programs of interest to Tri-I community members. Breakfast and lunch are provided.Keynote Speaker: Rasheed Gbadegesin, MBBS, MD, FASN - Duke University School of Medicine"Unraveling the Mysteries of Nephrotic Syndrome: A Physician Scientist Story"Dr. Rasheed Gbadegesin is the Wilburt C. Davison Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Professor in Medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC. He is the Associate Dean for Physician Scientist Development and the Director of the Office of Physician Scientist Development. Dr. Gbadegesin’s research is focused on understanding the molecular pathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome, and the biologic basis for disparity in its incidence, and therapy response. Nephrotic syndrome and other chronic kidney diseases has profound life-long consequences on a growing child and the therapy resistant type is a leading cause of mortality World-Wide. In the last fifteen years, Dr. Gbadegesin and his team have identified at least ten new genetic causes and genetic risk factors for nephrotic syndrome and other chronic kidney diseases. In addition, he and his collaborators have continued to characterize the mechanisms by which these genes can cause nephrotic syndrome, and recently identified biomarkers of disease, and druggable pathways that may treat these genetic defects and the more common idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Dr. Gbadegesin has created a robust bio-repository for childhood nephrotic syndrome by World-Wide collaboration and networking, and is playing leadership role in National and International networks that are unraveling the genetic basis for excess of chronic kidney diseases in people of African ancestry. In recognition of his scientific achievements, Dr Gbadegesin was elected into the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in 2016 and Association of American Physicians (AAP) in 2022.
