A﻿bout the Event Over the past decade or so, &quot;True Crime&quot; as an entertainment has become extremely popular. Streaming services have hundreds of series on the topic, and 50% of the top charting podcasts are True Crime Podcasts. What is this human fascination that has become such entertainment? Is this a form of trauma porn? In this program we explore reasons behind True Crime popularity and the way its ethical ramifications impact those who are &quot;obsessed&quot; with these stories and how the entertainment industry capitalizes on another&#x27;s tragedy, loss, or misfortune. Panelists:alphabetical by first nameApril Ignacio: Founder of Indivisible Tohono, a grassroots community organization that provides opportunities for civic engagement and education beyond voting for members of the Tohono O’odham Nation. She serves as the Chair for the Arizona State Democratic Party Native American Caucus and sits on the Arizona State Study Committee for Missing &amp; Murdered Indigenous Women &amp; Girls.Gray Cavender : Emeritus Professor of Justice &amp; Social Inquiry in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. His teaching and research interests include the media, crime and punishment, and law and society. He has analyzed factual and fictional media depictions of crime and the “CSI Effect” in the justice system in books, journal articles and chapters. Lauren Mucciolo: Executive producer of the ASU’s Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Lauren is a multi-award winning journalist, director, and producer of more than a dozen investigative documentaries for PBS Frontline and the BBC and Channel 4 in the UK. Lee Griffo: Advocate of education and reform in the production and consumption of this programming. In 2012, Lee’s sister, Jessie McCaskill, was murdered by her wife in a domestic murder-suicide in Phoenix. In 2015, Investigation Discovery’s “Deadly Affairs” aired an episode dramatizing the killing. This galvanized Lee against such sensational media representation and re-traumatization of victims’ loved ones.Sarah Florini: Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies in the Department of English at Arizona State University. Her research explores the intersections of race, American culture, and emerging technologies such as Twitter and podcasting. Her monograph, Beyond Hashtags: Racial Politics and Black Digital Networks, was published by New York University Press.
