About this event

  • 2 hours

Volunteers will get to participate in all aspects of crop cultivation on our small-scale, diversified, organic garden. We practice regenerative farming practices, including season extension, integrated pest management, and reduced tillage or "no till" methods. Volunteers get to work alongside our small farm crew, and we try to make sure all volunteers get to take home a sample of farm produce. Be sure to wear clothing and shoes that you can get dirty, and dress for the weather as most activities take place outdoors! (Events are canceled in cases of extreme weather only, if it is rainy or cold, there is still plenty of work to do inside our greenhouses or sorting seeds, etc. inside the Food Lab). Both UVA students and community members alike are invited to garden with us, all ages are welcome, but we ask that children under the age of 18 be accompanied by an adult. All volunteers must complete a waiver electronically before attending.

Frequently asked questions

Is this only for UVA students?

Morven Kitchen Garden is happy to provide volunteer opportunities for all types of community members, not exclusively UVA students. However, we currently only provide carpooling options to current UVA students.

Are there carpooling options available?

We try to keep our events accessible by offering carpooling options to current UVA students. Simply respond to our transportation questions during registration and the organizer will contact you the day before your event to assign carpool groups.

Do I need to worry about ticks or poison ivy?

While ticks and poison ivy only occur rarely at the garden, they have been noticed occasionally during the warm season. While not required, encourage volunteers to wear long pants, check for ticks afterwards, and wash up with soap and water to reduce likelihood of these encounters.

Are the bees at the garden?

Morven Kitchen Garden has several active honeybee colonies. In general, our bees are very docile and easily avoidable, however, those with severe allergies should be advised.

I don't have boots. Are athletic shoes ok?

You can garden in almost any type of footwear. Just keep in mind that your shoes will get dirty and possibly muddy. If your footwear is not waterproof, that dirt and/or mud can end up in your socks and on your feet. Some people prefer to bring a fresh change of socks or shoes to keep clean.

How do I complete the waiver?

The waiver is completed electronically using DocuSign. You'll receive a link to complete the waiver through email 24 hours in advance of the event. For this reason, we advise each person in your party to register independently. If you register for another person, please forward that email to them.
