Learn how to plant seeds in winter to make them hardy for the spring.

Join us at the garden for our winter sowing workshop! Winter sowing is a method of growing from seeds that is an alternative to starting seeds indoors or direct sowing them in the spring. Seeds are planted in repurposed plastic containers (e.g., clamshell produce containers or gallon milk or water jugs) that function as mini greenhouses. The containers are left out in the weather and require very little care until the seeds germinate. There can be a huge yield from winter sowing, and the plants tend to be very hardy because they have been outside all along. Plus, winter sowing lets you garden all year round! B﻿ring your own clamshell container (3 inches high) or gallon milk or water jugs. We will provide seeds, soil, tools, and instructions. If it is too cold and windy, our weather alt date will be Jan 21st – we'll keep you posted.
