About the E﻿vent:Please join us for a lively and engaging discussion on the role of transnational migration in Canadian and global agriculture. The panel will feature commentary from Dr. Evelyn Encalada Grez, Assistant Professor in Sociology, Anthropology, and Labour Studies at Simon Fraser University, Dr. Warren Dodd, Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Sally Humphries, Professor Emerita of Sociology and International Development at the University of Guelph, and Gabriel Allahdua, agricultural farm worker activist and a Visiting Fellow in the Grounded Theory Lab at the University of Guelph. As well as discussing the changing nature of agricultural labour markets, the panel will celebrate the life of Kerry Preibisch, whose lifelong commitment to community engaged research and migrant labour rights shaped - and continues to shape - the study of labour relations, transnational migration, and global development. M﻿eet the Panel:D﻿r. Evelyn Encalada GrezDr. Evelyn Encalada Grez is a Latinx Assistant Professor in Labour Studies and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. She is the co-founder of the award-winning collective, Justice for Migrant Workers, J4MW, that has advocated for the rights of migrant farmworkers in Canada and transnationally for over two decades. As a community engaged scholar and Public Sociologist, Dr. Encalada Grez has mobilized her migrant-labour research through various media such as documentaries and given talks in venues such the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the United Nations in New York. She worked closely with Dr. Kerry Preibisch and they both presented their research on migrant workers’ constructed vulnerability to Members of Parliament in Ottawa. Dr. Encalada Grez has also worked with export-processing workers throughout Mexico and Central America. She was also lead travelling faculty and an Academic Director teaching social justice issues to university students from the USA in over 6 countries. Dr. Encalada Grez&#x27;s academic work and political advocacy is driven by her own immigrant working class family’s experiences. She is committed to centering precarious workers’ voices and knowledges to effect structural change for work and life premised on “dignity and respect.”Dr. Sally HumphriesFor more than 30 years, Sally Humphries has worked in the area of community engaged scholarship with small farmer researchers, mainly in Honduras where she partners with the local non-profit research organization, Foundation for Participatory Research with Honduran Farmers (sp. acronym FIPAH). The focus of the research engagement has been sustainable agriculture and resource management, and gender and youth equity in socio-economic development. Dr. Warren Dodd﻿Warren Dodd is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. His research examines how poverty, migration, food security, and climate change interact and shape health and development outcomes in resource constrained settings. He conducts research in close collaboration with community partners and organizations with the goal of co-producing information to support decision-making and action. Regionally, he has worked and conducted research in Honduras, Guatemala, India, the Philippines, and Canada. Warren earned his PhD in Epidemiology and International Development Studies at the University of Guelph and completed post-doctoral training at the University of Toronto funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.Gabriel AllahduaGabriel is a former migrant farm worker from St Lucia, an organizer with Justice for Migrant Workers and now activist in residence at the University of Guelph.
