About the Workshop

TWI stands for Training Within Industry, which is a training and development program that was developed in the United States during World War II to address the shortage of skilled workers in the manufacturing industry. The TWI program included a range of training modules focused on improving workforce skills and productivity, including TWI Job Instruction, TWI Job Methods, TWI Job Relations.

Why is it Important?

TWI is designed to help organizations improve productivity, reduce waste and inefficiencies, and build strong relationships between managers and employees by providing a structured approach to training, process improvement, and workplace relations.

What Are the Expected Outcomes?

Participants will be prepared to begin JI, JM, and JR in the workplace. Additionally, they will be well prepared to teach these methods using Gemba Academy training videos (subscription required).

Attendee preparation:

Attendees should bring a small job to teach others during the workshop. This should be a job that can be done in the training room without special tools or equipment.

Workshop Duration and Agenda:

• The workshop starts at 1:00 PM on Monday and ends at noon on Friday of the same week.
• Each of the three topics (JI, JM, JR) will be presented in two-hour blocks and the topics will rotate every two hours so that each topic is presented for a total of 10 hours.
• The rotation serves the purpose of allowing participants to process information and reflect on each topic over the course of five days. This helps facilitate deeper learning.

About the Instructor:

Steven Kane is the Director of Coaching and Certification at Gemba Academy and has more than twenty years of experience in Lean and Continuous Improvement. Steven has been a kata coach since 2009 and is a certified coach through Coach-U, an ICF-accredited coach training organization. Prior to Gemba Academy, Steven had a diverse career ranging from being responsible for a large medical device sales territory, plant manager where he leveraged lean methods to drive improvement, and VP Operations at Specialty Silicone Fabricators where he led the lean efforts of the company. He has served on the western region board of The Association for Manufacturing Excellence and has worked with the Michigan Lean Learning Consortium and the California Central Coast Lean Forum.
