High praise, high poverty in the church pewJeremiah Camara’s documentary film “Contradiction: A Question of Faith,” examines the saturation of churches in African-American communities co-existing with poverty and powerlessness.Camara, once a member of a large Black church in Cincinnati, Ohio, his hometown, came to believe that most churches were preaching a message of helplessness, the conviction his film explores. Camara is the author of the books &quot;Holy Lockdown: Does The Church Limit Black Progress? &quot;and &quot;New Doubting Thomas: The Bible, Black Folks &amp; Blind Belief.&quot; Camara is a creator of the widely watched YouTube video series, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@camara714" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Slave Sermons</a>.The day after the film screening, Camara will deliver his talk, “Does the Dominant Culture Have the Right To Criticize?” The talk, free and open to the public, is at the Ethical Culture Society meetinghouse, 687 Larch Ave., Teaneck, NJ, and on Zoom. <a href="https://ethicalfocus.org/church-state/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">All details</a>.
