No more trying to be mindful alone.The Hive exists to develop creative, compassionate, and mindfully-engaged citizens in the Cincinnati region through small group classes and workshops. We have curated a collective of proven teachers, facilitators, and spiritual directors to help guide your learning in mindfulness, contemplation, art and action. We hope you'll try a class and like it enough to become a regular member. Click here to join today.</a></p><h2>The Oppressor Within Us: Confronting the Influence of Dominator Culture on the Interior Life</h2><h3>Domains: Mapping Tools, Healing Work, Collective Action</h3><p><em>“The true focus of revolutionary change is never merely the oppressive situations which we seek to escape, but that piece of the oppressor which is planted deep within each of us, and which knows only the oppressors&#x27; tactics, the oppressors&#x27; relationships.”</em> - Audre Lorde</p><p>What is behind the common refrain, “I am my own worst critic?” More importantly, how do we liberate ourselves from this tendency to “beat ourselves up?” Though people of different backgrounds and identities experience it in different and disproportionate ways, all of us have, at some time or another, lived or worked under oppressive systems and relationships. These dehumanizing forces of domination can create an abuser and a victim within our own psyches, a contradiction we spend significant time and energy trying to break, consciously and unconsciously, in healthy and unhealthy ways. If unchecked, we often use whatever privilege and power we do have to replicate onto others the same kinds of harm we have received.</p><p>Drawing on the work of Paulo Freire, bell hooks, and Resmaa Menakem, the first half of this course will explore the ways in which each of us has internalized harmful messaging from oppressive systems and relationships. The second half of the course will be dedicated to exploring practices that might free us from these dynamics, relying heavily on depth psychology and the work of practitioners on the forefront of embodiment and somatic abolitionism.</p><p>The course will use a combination of teaching modalities, including discussion, small groups, dyads, and lectio divina.</p><p>John Klingler is a white-bodied teacher, writer, and organizer based in Cincinnati. A long time educator, he is most recently interested in building awareness around the intersection of personal healing and collective justice. He has facilitated intimate groups dedicated to these ends through a process of embodied, compassionate connection and vulnerable sharing.</p><h3>N﻿ote: There will be no class on February 9th.</h3><h3>Covid Considerations: Masks are currently optional at the Hive. Individuals may choose to wear a mask for personal protection, and as always, we ask anyone who is feeling sick or has a high temperature to not attend until they are recovered.
