Running February through May of 2023, Living Futures Saturdays is a monthly event series featuring climate-engaged presenters from a variety of disciplines. Join us as we listen, learn, and create community and new knowledge. Events will comprise presentations by each of two speakers, followed by community discussion and synthesis. The April 1 event will be held in person at Perfect Lovers on Roxboro Street, 3-5pm, and feature Northstar Church of the Arts Executive Director Germane James and artist/Radical Repair Workshop founder Julia Gartrell. Advance tickets required. Germane James is a creative leader focused on the intersection of social, environmental, artistic, and economic justice. Germane brings a unique mix of creative, strategic and project management skills to NorthStar. Throughout her career, she has advocated for cultural, environmental, and educational justice, supporting the position that the arts can be an equalizing factor in the revitalization of under-served communities. Germane is a successful fundraiser and has led strategic and capital campaigns for statewide and local non-profit institutions such as the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the LGBTQ Center of Durham and most recently, the Exchange Family Center. For the last five years, Germane has been working as a free-lance consultant, guiding beloved Durham and statewide organizations such as Democracy NC, Artspace Raleigh, Veritas Collaborative, and the Southern Documentary Fund through comprehensive strategic planning processes. Thanks to her grounding Virgo moon, Germane’s natural eye for detail has awarded her the opportunity to collaborate on magical events with brilliant artists such as Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Sangodare, and Gabrielle E.W. Carter. Germane is honored and grateful to use her deep passion for the arts to lead NorthStar into this new and exciting phase and make an impact on the creativity, joy, and quality of life of the Durham community. Julia Gartrell is a sculptor who uses wood, textiles, native clays, plaster, bric-a-brac and found objects to interrogate material usage in traditional Appalachian craft and American culture. Reuse of material and “making do” are central to her explorations. The research grounding Julia’s work focuses on her paternal ancestors, who were subsistence farmers in rural north Georgia. Oral history, lore, and relics are among the things gathered for her practice.She is currently running a traveling art project called the Radical Repair Workshop. Julia was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. She received an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design (2015) and a BA in art from Kalamazoo College (2008). She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and has participated in residencies at the Fine Arts Work Center, Arrowmont School of Arts &amp; Crafts, The Power Plant Gallery at Duke University, Ox-Bow School of Art in Michigan, Ifitry Artist’s Residency in Morocco. Julia has taught at RISD, John Tyler Community College, Kalamazoo College, and Virginia Commonwealth University._________T﻿icket Level Explanation: S﻿liding scale tickets are available for in-person attendance. Community level helps cover basic costs, Supporter level helps support presenter compensation, while Advocate level also contributes to the manifestation of future offerings.
