The Women Who Built Ashkenaz

Ashkenazis the East Bay's home to world music & dance... established 1973; nonprofit since 1997. We are always all ages! Kids 12 & under are admitted free unless otherwise noted.All of our online ticket sales are will call.We will have a list of ticket buyers at the door; you do not need to bring a printout of your ticket/order confirmation.Doors open 30 minutes before showtime, or 30 minutes before the dance lesson if there is one, unless otherwise noted.Ashkenaz's Café opens when doors open and offers beer (draft and bottled), wine, kombucha, juices, sodas, coffee and tea, and snacks and light meals (all vegetarian, mostly organic).

Doors at 7:00 PM - Show at 7:30 PMIn honor of Women’s History Month, Ashkenaz will pay homage to The Women Who Built Ashkenaz, with a night of performances, honoring the many women who have played an integral role in Ashkenaz’s success over the last 50 years. This special event will pay tribute to the female pioneers who have shaped and strengthened our community over the years, specifically those involved in the formative transition of Ashkenaz into the nonprofit that it is today. From music and dance to community building, these women have left a lasting impact on Ashkenaz and beyond.We&#x27;ll hear from trailblazing musicians, dancers, and community leaders who will share their stories and experiences as the founding members of the board of directors at Ashkenaz and leaders of the huge transition that transpired after the death of our founder, David Nadel. Be inspired by their passion, creativity, and drive as they share what they&#x27;ve learned, and the legacy they&#x27;ve built.We&#x27;re very excited to also welcome back our good friends True Life Trio! True Life Trio’s music is all about harmony. The fiery voices of these three women spin and interweave, traveling from Ukrainian village tunes, to Greek polyphony to Louisiana two-steps. Bulgaria to the Bayou. On paper, it’s an unlikely combination but in person, it feels just right. Enjoy live music, dance performances, and a special reception to commemorate the evening. True Life Trio Performance

Join Executive Director of Ashkenaz, Sarah Travis, as she brings "The Women Who Built Ashkenaz" to the stage. Joined by most of the founding board members of the nonprofit, learn about the history of Ashkenaz -- how these leaders got involved, the transition to a community-centered nonprofit after the sudden and tragic death of David Nadel, the founder, and what these types of spaces in Berkeley mean to our community at large.
