Oak Spring Garden Foundation - Pavilion at Rokeby Farm

Overview: Join the Oak Spring Garden Foundation’s Biodiversity Management Team for a half-day workshop to learn how to plan and implement your own wildlife garden. The morning will consist of classroom instruction followed by a visit to the Rokeby wildlife garden to observe and discuss a developing garden. Topics that will be covered include: the fundamental components of a wildlife garden, design basics, strategies for supporting and encouraging different groups of species, overviews of various establishment and maintenance techniques, and where to find local resources to help you get started. Our hope is that this workshop will inspire and prepare you to start a wildlife garden of your own, no matter the size.
About OSGF and the Biodiversity Management TeamThe 700-acre Oak Spring Garden Foundation (OSGF) estate, protected by Paul and Bunny Mellon as part of a conservation easement, features a rich mixture of fields, meadows, woods, streams, and wetlands. OSGF is actively stewarding the land to protect and foster wildlife across the estate. In particular, OSGF’s Biodiversity Team is working to inventory the diversity of plants and animals found on the property, enhance their habitats, and share these biotic treasures with the public. The team’s recent work has included establishing a demonstration wildlife garden on the Rokeby Farm tract that focuses on Virginia native plants. What to Expect: This workshop will include an indoor and outdoor component. Participants should arrive with proper footwear, sufficient water, and dress appropriately for the weather, rain or shine. Snacks, water, coffee and tea will be provided.
