Coastal Continuing Education was founded in 2019 by Hillcrest Psychological Associates and Positive Change Counseling Center. We are two group practices offering outpatient mental health in the greater San Diego area. Coastal Continuing Education is approved by the California Psychological Association to provide continuing professional education for Psychologists. Coastal Continuing Education invites you to attend this interactive and reflective 4-hour workshop with Dr. Nadine Mastroleo, PhD, on motivational interviewing. This training is for all clinicians and treatment providers seeking to gain a better understanding and working knowledge of how to enhance and utilize change talk.Course Description:Motivational Interviewing is a highly effective therapeutic approach for assisting clients towards behavioral change, especially within the field of substance use treatment. While foundational components of MI Spirit, Empathy, and Collaboration are critical to supporting desired client outcomes, more recent research has focused on identifying change language (discussion of reasons, need, ability, commitment to change behaviors), supporting change language, and understanding the role of sustain talk (discussion of maintaining current behaviors). This workshop will expand clinicians&#x27; understanding of change and sustain talk language, while developing skills to recognize both within sessions and employing skills to enhance change talk, thereby offering a path to improving client outcomes.Learning Objectives:This workshop is designed to help you:1. Recognize client change and sustain talk within clinical sessions.2. Identify opportunities within clinical sessions to enhance change talk among clients.3. Develop change plans among clients willing and able to make behavior change.4. Demonstrate skills aligned with current research known to enhance behavior change by eliciting change language from clients.Online check in will be at 8:15am. Nadine Mastroleo, associate professor of Psychology, Clinical Science completed her PhD in counselor education and supervision from Pennsylvania State University in 2008. She also holds a masters in college counseling from the University of San Diego. She completed her postdoctoral training at Brown University and the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies. Mastroleo was an assistant professor (research) at Brown University in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences from 2010-2015.Dr. Mastroleo's primary area of research focus is on evaluating brief motivational alcohol interventions with college students and individuals who drink heavily. Further, she examines the within-session behaviors of brief motivational interventions to study the mechanisms of behavior change (i.e., change talk, sustain talk). She has published over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts in various journals and has been consistently funded from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism (NIAA) since 2007.
