Greenbelt Museum Historic House

Greenbelt, Maryland, is a National Historic Landmark planned community, that was built in 1937 as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Construction of the town offered relief work during the Great Depression, it provided housing for families of modest income (though sadly, it was initially segregated), and it was designed as a garden city that would be a model of modern town planning. This bold experimental community is still thriving today. Tours of the house provide visitors with a view of home life for ordinary American families during the Great Depression and World War II. The Museum&#x27;s historic house has been restored and furnished with objects from the period of 1936-1952. The furniture on display was designed by the Resettlement Administration’s Special Skills Division and made available to early Greenbelt residents. The house also includes objects associated with everyday life like Fiesta ware, Depression glass, kitchen utensils, children’s toys, clothes, and linens.
