Fibershed is a non-profit educational and research organization that develops regenerative textile systems that are based on carbon farming, regional manufacturing, and public education.We envision the emergence of an international system of regional textile communities that enliven connection and ownership of ‘soil-to-soil’ textile processes. These diverse textile cultures are designed to build soil carbon stocks on the working landscapes on which they depend, while directly enhancing the strength of regional economies. Both fiber and food systems now face a drastically changing climate, and must utilize the best of time-honored knowledge and available science for their long-term ability to thrive.

Learn to Weave

Learn a variety of weaving techniques from Fibershed's knowledgable and friendly instructors

Bring your machine (or rent a machine from Pia for $10 for the day) and learn the very basics of machine sewing. Six students maximum.After practicing sewing straight, threading, spooling bobbins, understanding seam allowance, understanding thread tension, how to iron a seam, how to pin, choosing fabric, problem solving and all else basic, we'll be ready to tackle our first project—a tote bag. Pia will supply the pattern. Please bring your own canvas-weight fabrics. One-half yard is needed for the tote bag. Pia Andersson has an educational background in the textile arts with a college degree from University of Gothenburg, Sweden, where she grew up and lived until her late twenties. She was the founder and CEO of Mimi the Sardine from 1990 until she retired in 2014, so most of her professional life was spent in design and textile product development in the SF Bay Area. Besides her own line of children’s accessories, she designed and produced children’s clothing for Hanna Anderson and Garnet Hill.
