Please join the Beijing Film Academy North American Alumni Association (BFANAAA), United Chinese Alumni Associations (UCAA), and Beijing Institute of Technology Alumni Association at Silicon Valley (BITAASV) for a screening of the 1995 Chinese film A Mongolian Tale. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director Xie Fei (谢飞).

Xie Fei is a world-recognized Chinese film director. Xie was born in Yan'an city of Shaanxi Province, China.
A graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, Xie has also taught at his alma mater as a vice-president of that institution.

谢飞（1942年8月14日－），出生于陕西延安，籍贯湖南省长沙市宁乡县，中国导演。曾就读于北京四中，是第四代导演中最有成就和有国际影响的导演之一。其代表作品有《我们的田野》、《湘女萧萧》、《本命年》、《香魂女》和《黑骏马》 等，凭借《香魂女》获得1993年德国柏林电影节金熊奖。

A Mongolian Tale tells the story of two childhood sweethearts from their youth into their adulthood as set on the Mongolian steppes. Nai Nai (<A CLASS="new" HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dalarsurong&action=edit&redlink=1" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Dalarsurong (page does not exist)" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dalarsurong</A>), an old Mongolian woman is living with her orphaned granddaughter, Someyer, when she accepts into her home a boy, Beiyinpalica, whose mother has died and father cannot care for. Though raised as a brother and sister, Somiya and Beiyinpalica grow close.
As Beiyinpalica (now played by the Mongolian pop singer <A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengger_(singer)" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Tengger (singer)" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tengger</A>) is about to enter adulthood, his father suddenly writes and orders him into the city to study <A CLASS="mw-redirect" HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterinary_science" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Veterinary science" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">veterinary science</A>. He leaves but promises Someyer that he will marry her when he returns. While in the city, Beiyinpalica also becomes a student of music. When he returns three years later, he discovers that Someyer (now played by <A CLASS="new" HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Naranhua&action=edit&redlink=1" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="Naranhua (page does not exist)" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Naranhua</A>) has become pregnant by another man. Heartbroken, he leaves once more.
Twelve years later, Beiyinpalica has become a celebrated folk singer. Someyer, meanwhile, has born four sons and one daughter, though she is generally neglected by her drunken husband. Back home, Beiyinpalica suddenly finds himself in the position of being a father-figure for the girl.

十多年前，年幼的白音宝力格因母亲去世，被送到草原上的远亲奶奶家，与六岁的索米雅一起长大。在奶奶的调教下，白音宝力格很快成了牧民的孩子，并得到了一只黑马驹。后来，奶奶提出让白音宝力格和索米雅订亲，于是，在白音宝力格被选去参加兽医学习班的前夕，二人表白了心意，并约定白音宝力格回来后便结婚。但四年过去了，白音宝力格回来后却发现索米雅怀上另一青年希拉的孩子，愤怒的白音宝力格与希拉大出打手，而后痛苦得离开了奶奶和索米雅……十年后，成为歌手的白音宝力格回到故乡草原，寻找失散多年的奶奶和索米雅，而索米雅的私生女其其格接待了他，并告诉他关于黑骏马的梦想。后来，白音宝力格受到了索米雅与丈夫达瓦仓的热情接待，白音宝力格在夜谈中知道了往事，百感交集。白音宝力格从索米雅忙碌、操劳而又幸福的身影中看到了奶奶的身影，他带着对过去和对人生的新认识离开了。

Though a simple film of love and loss, A Mongolian Tale was praised by Western critics, who saw virtue in the film's simplicity. In an early review, Variety found the film generally "lightweight" but nevertheless "beautifully made". Its premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival would also not go unnoticed, with the film garnering Xie Fei a best director award, and Tengger a special award for musical contribution.<A HREF="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Mongolian_Tale#cite_note-3" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> </A>
Upon its general release, A Mongolian Tale generated positive press not only for its performances, but for its setting. One review, from the San Francisco Chronicle noted that the film's setting had a "grandeur all its own". That did not stop the reviewer from finding the film a "compelling romance in a land whose hard realities never yield to anything so insignificant as human dreams".Janet Maslin of The New York Times, while generally positive in her review, singled out the actress Dalarsurong in her role as Nai Nai as "eas[ing] into the radiant role of this film's endlessly wise foster grandmother".
