Hands On History: Construction at the Manor

Where past meets present!King Manor Museum is the historic home of founding father, Rufus King, diplomat and framer of the United States Constitution. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, King Manor continues to host numerous seasonal festivals, family programs and classical music concerts year round. Join us, Tools & Tiaras, and Rojas AP in a workshop to inspire young people to enter construction work!

Are you interested in construction work? March is Women’s History Month! Several women worked at King Manor in the 19th century. Their jobs did not just include cooking and cleaning as was often the case with female workers in this time period, but also taking apart furniture, cleaning it, then reassembling it. To celebrate their craftsmanship and inspire young people of all genders to enter construction vocations, Tools &amp; Tiaras will be collaborating with us in a construction-style activity with safety information about the tools we use for building. Kids and teens can come and brainstorm ideas and bring them to life. We will be making mini Doric columns just like the ones at the entrance of King Manor!

From Tools &amp; Tiaras:We call it “Pillars Of Strength”. It’s a celebration of craftsWOMANship that combines the basics of architecture, plumbing, and carpentry… finished off with a little paint, glitter, and more!

What you (kiddos 6-14) are going to build and bedazzle, you get to take home!

This women-powered workshop will be led by the amazing Deborah Rojas of Rojas AP and our fearless Founder, Judaline Cassidy! Our host is the incredible Abigail Waldron, Education &amp; Program Coordinator for King Manor Museum , a historic home in Jamaica, Queens that&#x27;s fronted by iconic columns.

Hands On History is a FREE family program series held each first and third Saturday of the month at King Manor from 1-4pm.A﻿bout Tools &amp; Tiaras:&quot;﻿Tools &amp; Tiaras Inc is committed to advancing the interest of young girls and women who want to pursue non-traditional careers. T&amp;T motivate young girls and women who dream of having a career in the male-dominated construction industry, encouraging young girls and women already in the field to expand their horizon and set them on a path to the peak of their careers. We will make available a community network to help these young princesses connect with professionals, mentors, and leaders in the industry thus providing the support needed at all stages of their journey. We hope to build a lasting passion and curiosity within the present generations of girls and women that will make them consider a career as an electrician, carpenter, plumber or even an auto mechanic. Making intentional changes to the way we view and portray what constitutes &quot;women work&quot; will help foster the change that society needed desperately since yesterday. Tools &amp; Tiaras wants and will be part of this movement of change.&quot;A﻿bout Rojas AP:&quot;﻿Our mission is to use architecture and urban planning to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods while also satisfying all our clients.
