CELEBRATIONJesus and the Disinherited: The Framework for the DreamJanuary 18–20, 2023 (I﻿n-Person and Virtual)The theme for this year’s 2023 MLKJ Celebration is taken from Howard Thurman’s phenomenal work, Jesus and the Disinherited. Thurman teaches us what it means to find our voice in a world of oppression and be guided by an ethic of love. This book was known to be influential during Dr. King’s own journey throughout the Civil Rights Movement. The Pannell Center has dedicated three days to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and our responsibility as a community to care for the marginalized and oppressed. Blk Halos is an amalgamation of textile art, photography, poetry, and song. In its current form, the project seeks to honor contemporary cultural thought leaders like Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Willie Jennings, while also weaving ancestral thought and creative practices into new forms. Through the acquisition and creative exploration of natural materials relevant to the African diaspora’s broad-reaching history, Blk Halos wrestles with the question Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. posed over 70 years ago: Where do we go from here? “Here” implied a racism-tinged reality for Dr. King and his contemporaries. In the 21st century, we are still grappling with similar, though distinct, challenges as we struggle as a nation to acknowledge and heal from our collective history.Rather than attempt to proffer diluted solutions, Blk Halos aims to honor the rich cultural heritage of Black America, to offer a space of both lament and celebration for people of color, and to invite the broader public into healing dialogue and collaborative making.F﻿RIDAY, JANUARY 2010:00–11:30 am (PT) Pannell Center Morning MixerThe Pannell Center is hosting a morning mixer for its students, alumni, and supporters.
