Where do writers get their ideas? Hint: it’s not just by sitting at a desk.

Writing includes the process of collecting scraps and memories from our everyday lives and finding the stories inside them. Spend an afternoon exploring the familiar streets in the Surel Mitchell Live-Work-Create District and scavenging for stories. Then come back to Surel’s Place for writing and map-making prompts to help you turn your found scraps into story treasure.*The creative maps (or counter-maps) you make during the workshop may be exhibited at Choudry's reading on December 1 and during open studio on First Friday Dec 2nd!Open to everyone; no experience requiredAges 16 &amp; up We request that all participants wear masksBiography:Roohi Choudhry (New York) was born in Pakistan and grew up in southern Africa and the middle east. Awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in fiction, her writing has appeared in Ploughshares, Callaloo, Longreads and the Kenyon Review, among others. She holds an MFA in fiction from the University of Michigan and teaches fiction and memoir in New York City as well as online. She’s working on a novel set in South Africa and a collection of short stories exploring women and the wild. Find out more at brooklynstani.com
