The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center Inc. (The Clemente) is a Puerto Rican/Latino cultural institution that has demonstrated a broad-minded cultural vision and a collaborative philosophy. While The Clemente’s mission is focused on the cultivation, presentation, and preservation of Puerto Rican and Latino culture, it is equally determined to operate in a multi-cultural and inclusive manner, housing and promoting artists and performance events that fully reflect the cultural diversity of the Lower East Side and the city as a whole.

The pioneering Latinx visual and performing artists, Yara Travieso &amp; Guadalupe Maravilla, will co-host a major fundraiser as part of the annual BORIMIX Festival to support New York’s newly arrived asylum seekers at The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural &amp; Educational Center this Friday, November 18th at 8pm with doors opening at 7:30pm!!. The cultural field is providing a response to the political and social crisis brought on by Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to bus asylum seekers from the border to New York City. A panoply of musicians and performers will offer their star-power to attract audiences and raise funds in solidarity with the asylum seekers. These include Venezuelan Grammy award winner DJ "Cheo" Pardo from Los Amigos Invisibles, the earth shattering voice of Carolina Oliveros of Combo Chimbita, the Caribbean powerhouse Xenia Rubinos, the Joropo queen Mafer Bandola of LADAMA, &amp; the all-female salsa group Lulada Club, sponsored by the local Puerto Rican establishment, Que Chevere.¡EPA!, dubbed by the organizers, is a co-production with The Clemente for the 17th edition of Borimix Festival of Puerto Rican arts, which is recognizing Venezuela as a guest country this year. The public is also invited to view the See You In Florida exhibition, curated by Miguel Trelles and Roberto Weil where 17 artists whose work engages the triumphs and challenges of the Puerto Rican and Venezuelan diasporas will be on view. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to newly arrived asylum seekers seeking services at The Good Shepherd Church and South Brooklyn Mutual Aid. Guests can also bring coats to donate. “Thousands of asylum seekers, mostly Venezuelan, are arriving in New York and are being used as political pawns and NYC shelters are overwhelmed. The Good Shepherd Church and South Brooklyn Mutual Aid have become indispensable community centers that provide clothing, sanctuary, food, and resources to our asylum seeking families,” said artist Guadalupe Maravilla, who was previously a resident artist at The Clemente and who has been working with both organizations throughout the pandemic to raise funds, resources, and provide healing and sound baths, which is part of his artistic practice. Maravilla has teamed up with friend and fellow Cuban-Venezuelan film and performance artist, Yara Travieso who, along with Loló Bello, is producing the evening of healing, live performances, and a dance party at The Clemente.For folks who cannot accommodate the $25 ticket, we have a discounted promo code available by emailing epaclemente@gmail.com and for those folks we also encourage them to bring gently worn coats for the coat drive.
