Don't be afraid of Tableau calculations! Join us for a two day workshop to become a calculation expert!

Day One

8:30 AM - 12:30 PM Pacific

Day Two

8:30 AM - 12:30 PM Pacific

Adopting new technology is daunting, especially if you are coming from another platform you already know well. Many people that are learning Tableau have a background in Excel and maybe even SQL so they understand how calculations work but don't know Tableau's syntax yet.

This workshop will bridge that gap. We'll condense months of learning into two, half-days. I'll be sharing all the tips and tricks I've learned from using the product since 2014, teaching 2,000+ students and working with dozens of companies.

Topics we will explore include:

Math Functions

  • Number Functions Review
  • When to Use the ZN Function
  • The ABS Function

Aggregation

  • Aggregation Functions Review
  • When to Use Aggregations
  • Dealing with Aggregation Errors

Logic Functions

  • Basics of Operators and IF THEN
  • Grouping with IF THEN
  • How to Create Dynamic, Color-Changing Labels
  • Combining Multiple Fields with IFNULL
  • Meeting a Goal

String Functions

  • String Functions Review
  • Wildcard Filtering Limitations
  • Regular Expressions (REGEXP)

Date Functions

  • Calculating Differences Between Dates
  • Comparing Month to Date to Previous Month to Date
  • Comparing Year to Date to Previous Year to Date

Table Calculations

  • How Table Calculations Work
  • Comparing Time Periods Apples to Apples
  • Highlighting Points in a Line Graph
  • WINDOW Functions
  • Keeping Only Recent Transactions
  • What Does "Specific Dimensions" Mean?

LOD Calculations

  • Level of Detail Expressions
  • FIXED at the Data Source Level
  • Filtering on the Max Date in a Data Set
  • Calculating a Set Percent of Total
  • Custom Title Worksheets

Best Practices

  • Naming Calculated Fields
  • Adding Comments
  • Utilizing Folders
  • Case Sensitivity
  • Line Breaks

Requirements:

  • A Personal Computer
  • An External Monitor (strongly recommended)
  • Tableau Desktop Professional 2020.1 or later

    Prerequisites:

Some experience using Tableau Desktop. You should be able to do the following:

    • Connect to a data source.
    • Understand the difference between measures and dimensions.
    • Be able to build calculated fields on your own.

    What will you get?

In addition to two half-days of instruction, attendees will walk away with a 100+ page digital manual and data files to revisit the concepts on their own later.

This training will be hosted virtually. Details will be sent after registration.

What people are saying about OneNumber and trainer Eric Parker:

"After spending a couple days working with OneNumber, we are months, no, lightyears ahead of where we would be otherwise." - A OneNumber client to their CEO.

"Eric is one of the best instructors that I have ever had. Everything was paced very well and the content was extremely valuable. Personable, helpful and patient. Willing to explore with us students and excited about using Tableau, like we are!" -A Former Student
