The novel is set in China and the United States, and explores the themes of music, migration, and how the titanic forces of history play out in smaller, more recessive lives. There will be a short reading from the novel followed by a conversation, which will cover topics such as writerly craft and the possible relationships between scholarly writing and fiction.Lynne Kutsukake is a Japanese Canadian novelist and short story writer. Her debut novel, The Translation of Love, won the Canada-Japan Literary Award and the Kobo Emerging Writers Prize for Literary Fiction. Her short fiction has appeared in The Dalhousie Review, Grain, Prairie Fire, and Ricepaper and twice been anthologized in The Journey Prize Stories. She studied modern Japanese literature and has translated the short stories of Mizuko Masuda. Before turning to writing, she had a long career as a librarian at the University of Toronto East Asian Library.
