Lit & Luz: Virtual: Underbelly—On Art of Revision

The Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and ArtBegan in 2012 (unofficially) with the release of the fully translated—Spanish/English—MAKEMagazineissue 13, "Intercambio/Exchange." In 2014 the Lit & Luz Festival was launched from those pages and ever since has produced yearly events in Mexico City and Chicago, with writers and artists from Chicago, Mexico, and beyond.MAKE Literary Production’s sixth annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art, themed "Movement" is an ambitious exchange between Mexico City and Chicago. The week-long festival takes place at over a dozen arts venues and universities throughout Chicago, October 12th-19th. It concludes at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago with our signature event, the “Live Magazine Show." The following February, a similar series of events are held in Mexico City.We are honored to welcome inspiring authors, artists, and arts professionals from Mexico to Chicago. Art and language are key to understanding culture and community, and the cultural exchange between the United States and Mexico. With events such as Lit & Luz, we hope to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, and in particular, to increase the distribution of literature and art from Mexico for Chicago audiences and beyond.

<h1>Virtual: Underbelly—On Art of Revision with Poets Maya Marshall and Marty McConnell</h1>Poets Maya Marshall and Marty McConnell founded the online journal Underbelly &quot;to bring to the surface what we often strive to make invisible: the joyful, arduous, miraculous, by turns tender and brutal process of shepherding a poem from its primal state to its final state.&quot; Join us to learn more about their experiences as editors and poets, and the process by which they employ the &quot;practical magic&quot; of revision.Maya Marshall is the author of All the Blood Involved in Love and cofounder of underbelly, the journal on the practical magic of poetic revision. Marshall has taught at Emory University, Northwestern University and Loyola University Chicago and holds fellowships from MacDowell and Cave Canem among others. You can find her writing in Boston Review, Crazyhorse, Best New Poets, and elsewhere. She is an assistant professor of English and creative writing at Adelphi University.Part of the vanguard of poets fusing and refusing and queering the delineations between literary and oral poetry, Marty McConnell’s work blurs the lines between autobiography and personae to comment on and illuminate what it means to live and love outside the lines in 21st century America. McConnell&#x27;s second poetry collection, when they say you can&#x27;t go home again, what they mean is you were never there, (Southern Indiana University Press, 2018) won the 2017 Michael Waters Poetry Prize. Her first nonfiction book, Gathering Voices: Creating a Community-Based Poetry Workshop, was published by YesYes Books. She is the author of wine for a shotgun, (EM Press), which received the Silver Medal in the Independent Publishers Awards, and was a finalist for both the Audre Lorde Award (Publishing Triangle) and the Lambda Literary Awards. She is also a seven-time National Poetry Slam team member, the 2012 National Underground Poetry Individual Competition (NUPIC) Champion, and appeared twice on HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam.” She is the co-creator and co-editor of underbelly, a web site focused on the art and magic of poetry revision.~﻿~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<h2>A﻿bout the Lit &amp; Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art</h2>Now in its ninth cycle, MAKE Literary Productions’s <a href="https://www.litluz.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lit &amp; Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art </a> continues to support the creation of new art through international collaboration, and make space for essential dialogues between residents of Mexico and the United States.The 2022 festival is themed “Revision”—re-envisioning the arts in light of the pandemic, reconsidering the canon, and revising for the future. This cultural festival runs October 31-November 5 with more than a dozen free, bilingual events taking place at venues throughout Chicago, as well as online. Programming partners include Chicago Art Department, Contratiempo/Co-Prosperity Sphere, and the Hideout.The festival’s signature event, the Live Magazine Show, is co-presented on November 3rd with the University of Chicago’s Logan Center for the Arts.
