Slow Food East End is a chapter ofSlow Food USAand part of a global, grassroots organization founded in 1989 in Italy, by Carlo Petrini to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us. Since its beginnings, Slow Food has grown into a global movement involving millions of people in over 160 countries, working to ensure everyone has access to good, clean and fair food for all.We are an all-volunteer Chapter on the East End of Long Island — the North and South forks of Long Island from Riverhead to Montauk — that connects the Joys and Justice of food with a commitment to our local community and the environment.We seek to create dramatic and lasting change in our food system; Slow Food East End connects communities on the East End with the people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that create our food. We inspire individuals and communities to change the East End of Long Island through food that is good, clean and fair for all.All contributions to Slow Food East End are tax deductible through our affiliation with Slow Food USA, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, tax exempt organization. We are a chapter of SLOW FOOD USA.

We invite you to join us for Sour Power, A Fermentation Celebration! A family friendly learning and tasting experience.Saturday, October 22, 2-5pm (rain date Sun Oct 23)Sour Power tickets include hands on learning and sauerkraut making, a hearty lunch catered by Maple Tree BBQ, (smoked brats, fixings, veg pleasers too! ). Popular Long Island musicians: Maria Fairchild and Adam Becherer play music from bygone times, when life moved at a slower pace and entertainment was homegrown. Enjoy traditional tunes from rural America and Ireland with fiddle, banjo, guitar, and mandolin. Sour Power is a harvest fest to celebrate fermentation. Rooted in the culinary traditions of many cultures. fermentation is truly a slow food process that connects soil, seeds farmers, and foodies.Slow Food board member, Chef and James Beard award-winning author Peter Berley, has long been on the forefront of chefs extolling the health benefits of fermentation. Sour Power will be an opportunity to learn more from Peter about the traditions and techniques of fermentation with hands on instruction. <a href="https://www.jamesportfarmstead.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jamesport Farmstead</a>, a no-till organic farm on the North Fork that was recently awarded the Slow Food East End Snail of Approval award for its farming practices has been growing a crop of heirloom cabbage specifically for our inaugural Sour Power festival. The rows of cabbage planted for Slow Food will be harvested mid-October. Want to see more? A guided tour of the farm will be available at Sour Power too!All are welcome to help us shred a barrel full of sauerkraut from the freshly harvested cabbage. Thanks <a href="https://macariwines.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Macari Vineyards</a> for the barrel! Why cabbage? This sturdy, versatile vegetable has been commercially grown on Long Island for 200 years. Tickets are $40 for SFEE members, $50 for non members (plus Eventbrite fees), all the proceeds benefit our ongoing Feed the Forks initiatives. Children under ten are free. Sour Power tickets include:*hands-on learning* lunch catered by Maple Tree BBQ* live folk music * a guided farm tourMacari Vineyard wines and local beers will also be available for purchase. Each participant will also receive a complimentary quart of sauerkraut, available to pick up after curing. Pick up details will be provided at the event.
