Wintersongs with Kitka - OAKLAND (Saturday)

Dedicated to cultivating community and cross-cultural understanding through polyphonic practice, Kitka is a professional women's vocal arts ensemble and institute that draws inspiration from music rooted in Eastern European and Eurasian vocal traditions and techniques.As intrepid explorers of the expressive capacity of the human voice, Kitka strives to expand theboundaries of traditional vocal music as an art form through the creation of new works that amplify women's experiences.Founded in 1979 by a grassroots collective of singers who shared a passion for the resonant strength of Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian harmony singing traditions, Kitka’s programs include concerts and vocal workshops;leadership of community choirs: national and international touring; community service activities; broadcasts; research, recording and publication projects; artist residencies; commissioning programs; and adventuresome collaborations with someof the worlds most compelling traditional and contemporary multicultural and multidisciplinary artists.

A refreshing spin on traditional seasonal choral music… thoroughly marvelous! — NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIOFew things evoke the magic of the winter holidays as the transcendent splendor of the human voice. Kitka has researched and discovered a treasure trove of seasonal music from a wide variety of Eastern European ethnic and spiritual traditions. Wintersongs showcases material ranging from rousing Slavic folk carols to lush, meditative Eastern Orthodox sacred choral works, to original new pieces inspired by the beauty and mystery of wintertime.Kitka&#x27;s 2022 Wintersongs program theme is &quot;Shchedry Vechir&quot; (Ukrainian for &quot;A Generous Evening&quot;, a common phrase in traditional Ukrainian holiday carols). This concert will feature sacred and secular Ukrainian songs for the season while raising awareness of, and funds for, a variety of organizations addressing the current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.HEALTH AND SAFETYKitka is a fully vaccinated ensemble and organization. All concert attendees must present a vaccination card with booster, if eligible, along with matching photo ID and be fully masked while inside the concert venue.
