Learn how to "force bulbs," like hyacinths, indoors in this class.

Winter can be tough after the brilliant colors of fall fade, but you can have spring flowers in your house in the winter as a pick-me-up. In this class we will talk about growing bulbs indoors. Bulbs are little storehouses of energy that are generally activated by certain temperature and moisture fluctuations. Most commonly we think of daffodils, amaryllis, tulips, snowdrops, onions, and hyacinths. Daffodils are cheerful flowers that come in a wide range of colors- pastels, brights, and a dramatic deep purple. They can also be “forced,” a process that encourages bulbs to grow in an artificial environment, much faster than they normally do. It sounds complicated, but it’s very simple, using a glass vase, and some time spent in the refrigerator. You’ll be given bulbs to place in the vase, along with a choice of decorative glass pieces and a paint marker to give the vase a nice design. In a short time you’ll have a fully bloomed hyacinth for your home or office window. 

Please note that the bulbs themselves are mildly toxic so if you have an unusually curious or mischievous animal at home, this may be best as a gift for someone who doesn’t.
