"The Liberative Responsibility of the LGBTQ Community" with Cameron Overton

Transmission Ministry Collective

The concept of liberation is essential to queer Christian theology, but how do we actually live that out?

More and more LGBTQI2A Christians are experiencing the liberation that comes from embracing your whole self within an affirming community. Sometimes, though, we have a hard time letting go of ideas about who's "in" and who's "out," and we can accidentally recreate systems of oppression even in queer-affirming spaces. So how do we interrupt that cycle and learn to do things differently? Join Pastor Cameron Overton of Zao MKE Church to learn about his experience building a Jesus-rooted, justice-centered, and radically inclusive community that works for the liberation of ALL people! In this presentation, learners will be encouraged to look at the intersections of oppression and privilege from a Christian perspective. Learners will be engaged around the ideas of identity politics, solidarity, and self-reflection. Looking at the ways Jesus led us to engage with the oppressed and marginalized, learners can offer a new way of looking at kingdom building that does not include an “us and them” mentality, even in our own safe LGBTQI2A communities. This is a 60 minute lecture-based workshop with a time for discussion and questions. The workshop is open to everyone, and will be recorded. We'll be sending a link to the video out to all ticketholders after the session, so you'll be able to view the event even if you can't participate on the day.About the presenter: Pastor Cameron Overton (he/him) is a social work professor and the executive pastor of Zao MKE Church. As a young, Black, queer and trans person, Cameron's ministry calling is to build the church into an intersectional and queer liberated space. At Zao, Cameron keeps the church running by managing the operational details, building community partnerships, providing pastoral care, and leading worship every week with the Zao band. Cameron’s favorite part of ministry is getting to be authentically himself as he attempts to create a space that is available for others to live authentically free themselves. Cameron is a closeted nerd who loves to play board, card, and video games. He also loves to cook, as eating delicious food is one of his favorite pastimes.
