Art at Liljestrand: Fables and Realities about Tribal Art

An afternoon of presentation, conversation with Dr. Jerome Feldman

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new lecture series inspired by Liljestrand Foundation’s art collection. The ancient Chinese objects, antique Japanese screens, tribal art from India, Africa and the Pacific Islands, and a collection of pieces by notable twentieth century Hawai`i artists add texture and depth to the experience of being in the house. Using the art at Liljestrand as a touchstone, programs will give context to different aspects of the collection. Jerome Feldman is the Emeritus Professor of Art History at Hawaiʻi Pacific University, and is Affiliate Graduate Faculty at The University of Hawaiʿi at Mānoa. He was also The Slade Visiting Professor at Kings College, Cambridge University, UK in 2004-5. His specialization is in the arts of Tribal Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. He received his Ph.D. in Tribal Art History from Columbia University and has conducted field studies in remote islands of Indonesia, and Polynesia. He has written many articles and books, has studied museum collections in Europe, Asia, the Pacific and America and has aided in several important exhibitions including The Eloquent Dead at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, Nias Tribal Treasures at the Volkenkundig Museum Nusantara in Delft, and Beyond the Java Sea- a Smithsonian sponsored traveling exhibition. He contributed a chapter in a book on the UNESCO art collection that was published in 2022. He has also just completed a manuscript for a new book “Patterns that Connect” scheduled for publication in 2023.
