Join us for our quarterly book club! We'll be discussing "What Happened to You?" by Dr. Bruce Perry & Oprah Winfrey.

The Alliance for Human Services quarterly book club meeting will take place virtually on Thursday November 10th at 4 pm. The book chosen for this quarter’s event is titled “What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing” and was written by Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Bruce D. Perry, child psychologist and neuroscientist. In addition to writing the book, Perry and Winfrey narrate the audiobook. This is a must-read for anyone who works in social services, education, and for anyone who has endured trauma in their lifetime.We often hear people ask, “what’s wrong with you?” Yet, we don’t always ask them “what happened to you?” In many ways, our earliest experiences shape our lives well beyond childhood. Trauma does not just have a psychological effect on those who experience it – it has a physiological impact as well. Winfrey shares personal stories from her own upbringing of feeling abandoned, unwanted, and uncared for. For us to heal from our past, we need to understand how trauma impacts us into our adulthood. It is possible to heal from trauma and to forgive those who hurt us, but first, we need to understand what happened and how we can get the support we need to move forward.The Alliance looks forward to joining together to discuss trauma, its impact on ourselves and the clients we serve, and how we can move forward together towards healing.
